I think you should have rasterized the layer before applying the distort filter. Then that would look more like a wire.

@ Renegade: Restersising won't make a difference in the wire texture, its the value you put in for the wires that will affect its outcome.Thats why I used a 5 Px pencile :)
 
Dude even though this tutorial in image form looks extremely cool, could you also give a page break and add a text only version of it so we can at least read the article till the screenshots are loading? It's a pain to load a 530kb image on my 56k modem. :(
