PL11 - left ear-piece has lost bass? Is it possible?

I've had the SM PL11s for about 5 months now. I usually use them with my Nokia 5130 for my daily commute. Anyway, for about 10 odd days I didn't use 'em. After this gap, when I plugged 'em in yesterday I felt as if the sound was unbalanced. It was kind of disorienting & I found myself just going through various tracks to understand what was going on rather than enjoying my music.

I've come to the conclusion that the left ear-piece has lost bass. Not completely, but it lacks punch. I listened to Dream Theater's 6'0'clock over & over & got the impression that the sound is mainly coming over from the top right side of my head. The left ear-piece isn't completely dead however, as it does deliver sound otherwise.

So I'm confused as to whether this is purely psychological, or hardware gone bad? Or is it physiological [like a cold?]? I've tried other IEMs which come bundled with phones & found that the sound was balanced.

Can earphones just lose bass like this? What causes this? Does manufacturer warranty cover something like this? Is there a test mp3 download which will help play bass notes on each ear-piece separately & help confirm my suspicion?

Thanks for your time.

Nothing new here, it does happen many times. And warranty covers this problem so you better send them back to dealer he should replace them.

Hi ,

Very Very Possible .It Happens

Very much possible. I have a couple of PL11 and PL21 which has issues with the 3.5mm jack. Sent a mail to mediahome and he has reverted back. Have to send it back to him to claim the replacements.

Thanks for replying guys. Will try to claim warranty then. I believe it's got a 1 year warranty[?].

Btw, what could be the reason for this? 'Cos only the bass seems to have lost that punch. Rest seems ok.

Had also read someplace that it could happen if there is gunk/dust/grime on the ear-piece. & if it is so, then cleaning the ear-piece with hydrogen peroxide ought to fix it. That true?

^This doesn't apply to my case though. I did check.

Thanks again for your help.

Dont try nethin that voids the warranty... U shud try all these ways, wen ur close to or have gone past the warranty period! ;)

Low Frequency Response and Subwoofer Sound Test

download the wav file and check the left/right channels alternatively. Lots of different frequency tests available on that site.

To confirm that the problem is not in your ear, check both the earphones in the same ear by swapping.
don't put them in at the same time. I am not responsible for any injuries :)

Thanks. Will try that wav file when I get the chance.

& no I didn't try the hydrogen peroxide, cos there's no gunk/grime on the earpiece. All I've done so far is removed the tip & checked it. Don't even know where one can get hp [sounds dangerous, lol]. But thanks for the advice, cos I have done such stupid things in the past. Will be careful.
