If that be the case then WD will loose business to Seagate. Even though Seagate has shitty RMA service the WD recently are failing much more compared to their counterparts, especially EARS 1-1.5TB...

Also Seagate can make a kill with their 7200.12 in the 500GB arena where it has a solid HDD... All I can say is that this is the most stupid move by WD... :(
 
Ok guys,

since my requirement has increased, i need a 500 GB and a 1 TB ( i know what you're thinking) for different purposes.

If you're going to buy today, what would you buy (pls be specific with the model numbers)

500 GB = what HDD? and 1 TB = what HDD?

Will be going on 21st morning to buy. So shoot your responses, considering this is what you're gonna buy.

I also heard Seagate too has started reducing warranty, though not sure.

Samsung is already 3 yrs, and newer WD too.

If i were you, i would anyday go for 7200.12 drives, over the WD BLUE or BLACK even if all of them are 3 yrs warranty.

the 7200.12 is more reliable as per my experience, and performs much better than WD Black and costs less than both. Seagate might not be having onsite warranty, but their 7200.12 has less failure rates.

Ive seen WD Blue and Blacks goin dead within a month of purchase, and now my lappy's WD hdd too is dead. I hate WD.
 
1TB Seagate 32MB Cache & 500GB WD Caviar Blue or if you can afford then Black (best performance)
 
Even the WD black doesnt come closer to 100MBps avg transfer rate. The WD Black 1TB has avg of 86 MBps, Blue and Green beng lower, and 7200.12 has 105 MBps. This results was obtained when i tested those using HD tune Pro some months ago. Access time of Black was slightly better. And in performance, there is a very narrow gap between WD Blue and Black. SO unless for the extra 2 yrs warranty, it isnt worth extra 1k over Blue or 7200.12
 
^You seem to be some sort of an anti-WD fanboi posting too much against the performance of their drives - been noticing off lately in most of your posts in this section. I hope you do realise that HD Tune and synthetic benchmarks hardly have an effect on the actual performance of the drive? If you still have a WD FALS1001 drive with you, I'd like to see a test of how long it takes for a 4/8 GB blu ray rip to transfer across this drive to another drive (not the 1TB 7200.12 i.e) and a similar test on the Seagate 7200.12 1TB drive. If you could post back the results, I think that should probably answer most of your misapprehensions against this drive. I'm very sure WD does not blindly put a heftier price tag for this one as against the Caviar Blue.

Well speaking from personal experience then, I purchased a WD Black last month and on registering it the WD site says it has 5 year warranty.

Cant agreed to that mate, my WD blue gives 103.6 MBps :) transfer rate.

And about the warranty, older drives have 5 years while new ones have 3 years. Not so sure, things might have change.

Check Any data transfer based bench to see the difference.

Apart from access time benchs, the 1TB version of 7200.12 better the WD Black 1TB in all read/write tests and by good margins.

The WD Black runs 11c hotter, consumes lot more power in idle and load and costs 1k more. I indeed believed the WD Blacks are truly high performance drives, but after seeing all these benchs, and experiencing it myself, ive changed my view. Its ok to pay 1k premium for extra 2 yrs warranty, but its no way a High performance drive, when there are cheaper and faster drives available. And talking about quality, the failure rates are more or less the same, or maybe on the higher side. It might be due to the higher working temperature, which can be countered by using additional HDD cooling fan.

Not sure is Seagate too has cut down the warranty to 3 yrs, but i heard rumors from local vendor.

btw im not into a WD/Seagate war. the 7200.11 1TB comes nowhere near the WD black or the Blue.

lol. Any proofs with benchs ? Even an 8 yr old 20GB HDD can give higher than 10mbps.

Your drive has a problem. Common sense should knock you when you get such a low transfer rates for your drive. :|
