The point i'm trying to make here is.. a D-SLR is not for everybody. For that matter, not all of us even know how to use the various functions in a simple P nd S cam properly :)

Assuming your brother does not have much of experience with previously using a D-SLR, i would suggest that you get a really good P nd S. rather than directly taking the plunge with something like the XSi

And what led you to make this assumption....:P

Arey he is in UK and wanted to buy a GOOD D-SLR for a long time now...and i have been telling him the same thing which you rightly pointed out, but alas all in vain....fascination and craving have no cure.....so please let me in on something useful.....

I would suggest that you ask your brother to do some more research before buying and getting invested in a DSLR.
A DSLR is an expensive investment unlike buying a point and shoot.

If he is getting a DSLR he is getting into a photography system of which the camera is the cheapest thing you will buy.
Buying a DSLR normally will lead to the next question which kind of lenses.
If I assume from your earlier replies that he is just getting it for the heck of it I am sorry to say that he will be very disappointed.

Because by default the 450 D will cost atleast 550 dollars with a crappy kit lens.
Now the default kit lens is of very limited use. very little zoom sub par image quality.

He will have to buy some good lenses then, which cost more than the camera itself.

For example take my case; I wanted something to be better than my point and shoot and have ended up investing in the sony system which is as follows.

SONY A300 for 600$
18-70 Kit Lens
50mm 1.7 for 100$
18-250mm for 550$
135 f2.8 for 250$
70-210 f4 for 250$

Thanks for the info aha_neo will take it into consideration....while convincing my brother not to opt for the same.......

By the way can someone tell me an alternative for D-SLR but not exactly D-SLR, something in the point and shoot thingy... thats a bit heavy on the features and packs a lot of punch....:D

Panasonic Lumix G1 - however its not cheap.

Would Sony Cybershot DSC H9 be a good alternative....?????

sony H9 is the worst camera in sony H series, the H50 is much better camera with a slighly bigger sensor, and also has the control over noise reduction, but the new canon SX10is is a good camera with 20x optical zoom ,image quality is better then pansonic fz18/fz28 equipped with leica lens, and the flagship prosumer canon SX1is if priced right will be the prosumer camera to beat, with 4fps continous,HD 1080p video and a CMOS sensor for the first time on a NON DSLR canon.

450D is a good camera//yes one has to think of expensive lenses at some point of time..even otherwise the lens shipped with camera is decent...you learn to use a SLR only one if you use one;;;your bro will learn in time if he has interest..
