@TH not crapping the model you mentioned, called "1024 x 768" crap.:)

@Chaosdada sorry can't see any "shopping" site here, thanks for the update though.

didn't know that 1024x768 are referred to as 720p my bad!

No Full HD plasmas in India. Best bet is the Panasonic TH42PV80 for ~64k.

All 42" plasmas are 1024x768.

damn websense!!
Is the PV80 at least 720P? or is it the same 1024x768 crap?

uh??:hap5:
You do get Full HD plasma 42" tvs here.. They r expensive so its better to get a LCD.
Panasonic-TH-42PY700H is a Full HD Plasma

Plasma tvs in india are normally not the latest ones, they offer resolutions such as
852 X 480
1024 x 768
1024 X 1080
1920 x 1080

Also prices of LCDs are crashing. Currently 40-42" Full HD are
Sony-KLV-40S400A - 70-73k
Sony-KLV-40V400A - 80k
LG-Scarlet 42LG60FR - 72-74k
Samsung-LA40A610 - 68k
Samsung-LA40A550P1 - 65k

All these prices will be 5-20k less by Diwali

ps: i know all this cause i am also planning to buy a 47" lcd

Thanks for the comments. What is price for Panasonic-TH-42PY700H ? I read in certain articles that if you have a viewing distance of less than 8 feet then Full HD resolution is of little consequence. Is it true? Please clarify

Not worth buying at the price its selling and its a gen older than the PV80 which sells at 60% of the price. The only Full HD plasma worth buying is the Pioneer 5080FD but that costs ~3lacs :p.

At a distance of 8 ft and a screen size below 50", full HD will make an almost imperceptible diff. Buy a TV for better picture quality not spatial resolution.

Resolution is not as important as you might think. The most important aspect of picture quality is contrast ratio, the second is color saturation, and the third is color accuracy. Resolution actually is only a distant fourth!
Unless you have a very large television(50 inch or greater) and excellent source material, you'll have a hard time telling the difference between any of the HDTV resolutions. The leap from normal TV to HDTV is so huge that additional leaps in resolution--from high-def(720p) to higher-def(1080p) are tiny by comparison.Anyway there aren't too many full HD contents available. To fully enjoy 1080p content you need to have tv with screen size>50 inch and blu ray movies.

Also note that SD will look absolutely ugly on 1080p panel.(i have a dell 1080p panel and tata sky looks like crap).Well SD will look bad even on a 720p panel.Any HDTV will act like a magnifying glass, enhancing the imperfections which are specific to SD content.
So don't worry too much abt. resolution. As long as it is HD it will be great.Go buy a plasma that has better picture quality.

Could tell you which one to go for if you tell us the purpose of your purchase. What will you be using it for????

I will be using the plasma for watching HD movies. Actually i just got a few HD discs from the US.i fail to understand how can a tv with 1366x768 handle 1080p content of the original disc.

^Quite simple, actually. The inputs can accept a 1080p signal, which are then downscaled by the TV's internal scaler to 1024*768 or 1366*768.
All flat panel displays have scalers..

@TH : here thou mentioneth the Kuro again and sendeth messsa cursing myself for not being a millonair.

Join the club. A friend is looking out for a new PDP.. the Panny PV80 is ~61K, the Pio 428XD is ~1.4L, the new 50" is 2.2L, and the 60" is 4.2L. Insane.

He got the PV80.. ~95% as good as the 428XD.

I know someone in Delhi who got the 428XD for 1.08L and the dealer was quoting 1.65 for the 5080HD. I had a chat with the dealer and he said insured shipping will be another 3k and I can pick up the panel from the local pioneer service center. So its not as bad as it sounds :p.
