Official Launch Pics

Two Versions

Two versions of the PlayStation 3 will hit the market at launch, both in the black version of the console's livery. The basic version & a more expensive version. But at present, however, it's believed that this is the only substantial difference between the two versions.

Lower End Version:
HDD:20GB hard drive
Cost:$499/499 Euro

High End Version:

HDD:60GB hard drive .
Cost:$599/599 Euro

Both models will ship November 17 in “Clear Black†in the US ,six days after it has been launched in Japan. In Canada, the two models will ship for 549 CND and 649 CND on the same date, respectively. Sony anticipates shipping 2 million units at release.

All of the content demonstrated in the conference was in glorious 1080p, including games. Gran Tourismo,a prototype product, The Eye Of Judgement, was one of the first titles featured at 1080p. EA announced they will have 10 launch titles for PS3, though it isn't clear which titles will feature 1080p. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy 13 were two other memorable 1080p announcements.

A New Controller

Sony has ditched the "boomerang" controller originally seen with the PS3 at E3 last year in favour of sticking to the traditional lines of the Dual Shock 2 controller - but has made several key technical changes to the pad.The new controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world’s most popular PlayStation controller which has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide. The new controller looks almost exactly like the existing PS2 controller with the addition of two trigger buttons under the L1 and R1 pads, but also features motion sensitivity. The internal motion sensitivity gives the controller "six degrees of freedom. The wireless controllers will allow for seven players at a time to use the same console also a mini-USB interface is also featured on the front of the controller ,which is clearly visible in the official photo & it is suspected for recharging the batteries. But Sony has again stressed that this is not the final design and but analysts claim tat there will be very few changes before launch.

More Details:

The PS3 will come with several interoperability features. This also includes a function that will allow the "PSP" to link directly into the console. The conference call also alluded to some WiFi integration.Bluetooth will also be standard on the PS3.It will also have Giga-bit Ethernet and a pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) as standard, this will able users to download a variety of contents as well as access on-line games and services over the network.PS3 is also capable of playing back content from Blu-ray (BD) disc at a bit rate of multiplex 48Mbps with ease, the maximum bit rate defined in BD standards.PS3 supports a broad range of displays from conventional NTSC/PAL standard TVs to the latest full HD (1080i/1080p) flat panel displays, offering the joy of the most advanced computer entertainment contents to homes around the world.

Free Online Playstation:

PS3 will also have an extensive online back end and it looks very firm to challenge XB0X 360 Online...But unlike Microsoft's XBOX 360, Playstation online (the official name not announced yet) will be completely free.:hap2: This online service will also offer free additional content like voice messaging and a marketplace dubbed "Playstation Shop." The marketplace will act very similar to Microsoft's XBOX Live marketplace, allowing users to tie a credit card or prepaid "Playstation Card" into a specific account.Sony will also feature a "SingStar Store" in the marketplace that will allow users to purchase music from Sony directly. This song can then be transferred onto the PSP or the song can be played on the PS3.The media center for PS3 is then customizable with various skins and profiles available via the marketplace.

Sony gave out the specs on the PS3 at E3. The company mentioned that there would be two configurations: a $500 version with a 20GB hard drive and a $600 edition with a 60GB drive.

As expected, the company has confirmed that the console will ship early November 2006 but more importantly a simultaneous worldwide launch is promised, something that is sure to please the fans.

All of the content demonstrated in the conference was in glorious 1080p, including games. Gran Tourismo was one of the first titles featured at 1080p. EA announced they will have 10 launch titles for PS3, though it isn't clear which titles will feature 1080p. Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy 13 were two other memorable 1080p announcements.

Furthermore, the PS3 will come with several interoperability features, including a function that will allow the PSP to link directly into the console. The wireless controllers will allow for seven players at a time to use the same console. The wireless controllers are a strong departure from the old "boomerang" concept design. In fact, the controller looks almost exactly like the existing PS2 controller with the addition of two trigger buttons under the L1 and R1 pads, but also features motion sensitivity. The internal motion sensitivity gives the controller "six degrees of freedom." A mini-USB interface is also featured on the front of the controller -- we suspect for recharging the batteries. Sony stresses that this is not the final design.

However, a table in the document reveals that the 20GB PS3 will be severely handicapped in several ways.

For starters, only the 60GB PS3A will feature a MemoryStick/SD/CompactFlash reader, though we almost certainly suspect there will be add-on readers. The 20GB PS3 will not feature integrated 802.11b/g. Furthermore, the 20GB version will not feature HDMI output.

The price for the Japanese 60GB Playstation 3 has not yet been announced, but the retail price for the 60GB PS3 with HDMI, WiFi and card reader will be $599 USD.
