PS3 launch titles nearing 25GB limit, next year's expected to reach 50GB
During an interview with EuroGamer, Sony's worldwide studio boss Phil Harrison justified the use of the much-maligned Blu-Ray technology in the PlayStation 3 by stating that launch titles are already nearing the single-layer 25GB media limit, and titles next year are expected to approach the 50GB mark.

Harrison brought up the game sizes as an argument against those who suggested that the Blu-Ray drive was in the PS3 purely to push Sony's technology for movies. "It's got nothing to do with movies," Harrison responded. "DVD is not sufficient capacity to power the kind of data consumption, or to feed the data consumption needs of Cell and RSX - just purely as a gameplay device, we need Blu-Ray to supply the kind of data that PS3 games use."

And it's not just for pre-rendered cutscenes in 1080p either, apparently. Harrison hopes that developers will use the extra space for more than just graphics - 7.1 channel surround sound, more voices for characters, and varied animation sequences were cited as examples in addition to the expected high-resolution textures and high-polygon models. Cutscenes weren't discounted entirely though. "I see nothing wrong with having non-interactive, full HD sequences as part of the game," Harrison said. "That's all part of the production value and the experience that you get when you buy the game. I don't see that as a weakness at all."

The Blu-Ray drive has been criticized heavily for bringing up the cost of the PS3, and for short supplies of laser diodes causing a delay of the European launch until 2007.

well people usually cry that ps3 costs more n all. but what they fail to understand is that xbox 360 is using a normal dvdreader & when u buy a extra hd-dvdplayer for the 360 which ofcourse holds much less data compared to a bluray, its going to cost anywhere from 100-200$ more on the 400$ u pay for the 360. so if u go to see the ps3 is not priced badly at all which is what i have been saying since the time the pricing was announced. if people are willing to pay 500$ for just a gfx card it surely is not going to affect any ps3 sales for the way they have priced their complete hometheatre/console.

^^ lol though that reader isnt required for gaming ;) Blu ray is, so it mostly voids your point. Its been discussed to death anyways and lets put it to rest. A few weeks left to the ps3 launch.........

Whats got me flummoxed is the fact that for filling up a 26Gb disc you are either going to be using un-compressed game data, HD videos etc. If you compress all of that then even more assets will be required to fill up that space, such as game assests, hi-res textures, additional languages and all of that is going to bloat the development cost ! God save the publishers if the game bombs !

^^ unlikely it's just a add-on for Hd-dvd movie viewing. Having non-standard ODD would destroy the point of a console. Might as well market and sell it as a pc which can be upgraded time and again. ;)

Games beyond 25GB? Hahaha...what a joke. I do agree games on Blu ray can help for getting HD content for a better experience, but I am ready to bet the statement made above is just a bluff for hyping PS3. For that matter PS3 or any system in the world itself don't have that kind of power to process extremly high quality content, which can strech game content beyond 25 GB. The only things which must be pushing the barrier is HD Video, and not game content such high res textures or sound.

Games always get bigger....
I'm sure someone would have said the same things about DVD game disks when cds were the order of the day....
Nowadays all the good games come in DVDs....
Two years down the line...who knows...Game disks may be 25GB plus in size...

The ps2 being the inferior most had games for it already that crossed 7gb's for Christs sake (God Of War, Gran Turismo 4 etc), then 25gb really isn't a far-fetched vision for the size of the games considering the ps3 is at least 10x as powerful.

exactly. thats what all the people where crying that when ps2 released with a dvdplayer. every1 said it will go flop & that so much space is not needed. well its all history now. sony is known to take the initiative & they have done it again with bluray.

What about the 360 then. All games are covered by a single DVD alone. There goes your justifications for Blu-Ray and 25GB of space right there.

Note: I will alphabetically rearrange anyone's organs who claims the PS3 is x^n more powerfull than the 360.

And as technology progresses, storage management and compression techniques only get better. The 360 is living proof.

^^what he said and most cross-platform games will have the same size on both consoles save for the fact that the ps3 versions might have uncompressed 1080p fmvs which hog space over the standard ones. Compression algorithms have progressed a lot and recently there one company which claimed it could achieve compressions upto 70% of what is possible right now.

Sometimes the developers tend to 'not' compress their data much, to reduce loading times. It may be happening with the Ps3, but highly unlikely.

And about X360, I think its only a matter of time until it jumps to 2disk games or HD-DVD. We should wait for the Ps3 and the game to release before even trying to justify anything.

Yeah, I read that game devs are purposely uncompressing game data which probably explains the exponential sizes. While this assumably reduces load times it increases seek times as well.

Was just about to mention that. Disk read times will go up... in the case of the PS3, with quick RAM and a spanking CPU, you would have thought they would have gone the other way.
