In an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch, Sony’s Ken Kutaragi said that because of the power of the Cell processor and the RSX graphics chip, PlayStation 3 will use a custom cooling solution, with heat pipes. Heat pipes conduct the heat much faster than conventional cooling, and are commonly used to cool high-end PCs. Kutaragi also said that:

“We’re spending a lot on heat and electromagnetic interference (management). The power supply could almost be sold separately.â€

Confirming the rumors that the PS3 will need a large power supply, presumably bigger than the ones found in modern PCs.

Is Sony trying to combine 2 generations into one? No seriously? Now the power supply will have to be bought seperately along with an extra controller already with that behemoth price where M$ is planning to cut further down on 360?

I just hope Sony knows what they're doing....

The psu would have to be external anyways cause otherwise it would be near impossible to cram it in the ps3 casing. Taking it to the outside will reduce heat and emi. Heatpipes isn't anything new especially to PC's, even the x360 sports heatpipes for the x360 cpu.
