Playstation for Audiophiles ?!

Dumped Your PlayStation, Did You?
If you did, it could have been a big mistake. The buzz among audiophiles these days is that the original PlayStation (Model SCPH-1001) could possibly be one of the best CD players ever made! It’s said that if you were to purchase a player that could match that quality, you’d be spending in excess of $6000 (Rs 2,40,000) for it.

Audio geeks who’ve spent that kind of money on their current high-end amps must surely feel like complete asses, having wasted all that dough, when the answer was right in front of them all along!

But it seems,it requires dedicated subs, amplifier, setup to utilise it and you need to keep it ON for 3 days..before you can have the enriching experience!

Does, this mean, it provides better sound quality than conventional computer drives,,or the home theaters available in market..and what kind of stereo cds are needed to savour this experience???

these days???

that review (6moons) is from the beginning of '07, and we've been discussing this issue on forums for about 4 years now.

I forgot it's Digit. That's why the Z-5500 is priced at ~28K in the review, when the retail is much lower. Heads in the sand, anyone?

Anyway the PS1 has a few revisions, and the ones 'famed' for that kind of sound don;t exist anymore. 'Audiophiles' who have it proclaim magical properties, specially when modded a bit. I don't doubt the claim that they sound good, I'm just not sure of it's world-beating status. Some of the mod galleries at diyaudio have some heavily revised PS1s, which don't look like consoles anymore. I'm not sure how that helps.

In any case, if your downstream chain isn't up to it, you can forget about being able to tell differences. And you do need proper source material as well. MP3s converted from CDs aren't going to do it, nor are those original Metallica CDs. Grow up, and buy some 'real' music. I suggest starting with something produced by Blue Note.

Essentially the sony transport used for the original Playstation was quite good and thats what people like. The DAC is pretty much pathetic.

The jazz label?

^^Yep. I have some John Coltrane. The recording quality is stellar. Chesky also makes some fine recordings, as does John Atkinson, the measurement guru at Stereophile. Awesome stuff.

@Chaos - the first revision had a digital output :) Here's a link from a thread started in 2004, about 80+ pages, some discussion on analog, but mostly on transport and modding. I read through some of it in '05, then went and bought my NAD :)
