Please advice - Is it OK to buy Wii from US?

Hello guys,

I am in US these days, will return back to Delhi at the end of January.
I am getting strongly tempted to buy Wii console from here. Is it advisable? Should I wait and buy a modded Wii console from Palika when I comeback instead?

Pluses of buying in US -
1. Low price (around $250)
2. Original latest untouched hardware. Modded Wii hardware available in India could be old/damaged.
3. Loads of available add-on hardware accessories (like nanchuk, racing wheel, shooting aids etc). Are they available in India?

Minuses-
1. Its region-locked. Will region-free games "available" in Palika work on it?

Please advise!
 
u urself have mentioned the +ve and -ve points so take ur pic. If u can get original games for Wii then get it from US otherwise palika.
 
Nintendo really should have invested in India with the Wii. It's fun, it's new, it's cheap(er) and would definitely appeal to the casuals and non gamers in our country(of which there are lots). Come on, Nintendo! Are you worried about making too much money?
 
Guys please help me make the decision -

1) Are modded Wii and region-free Wii games easily available in Palika?

2) How much do they cost now days? (Both modded console and region-free games)?

3) How is the user experience of modded Wii users in India? Have you seen anyone facing hardware problems because of this?

4) Suppose I buy Wii from US and go back to India. Then in future, will it be possible for me to order latest Wii games for myself through US from India? (through Amazon.com or something)
 
Dude, u can buy the mod chip from US as well & mod it urself or u can get it modded it here in India itself!!!

U can always download Wii games off the internet!!!

If u wanna buy original US Region WII games then u can buy from Play-Asia, which ships to India for free!!!
 
I remember superczar quoting (who also got a wii from US) thats its not advisable to get a Wii from US, since modding it could be a PITA . It seems there are 3 terminals on which the mod chips is soldered and these 3 terminals are cut short while in production itself in US and hence modding is not very easy. Thats the reason y he advised to get a Wii from Palika Bazaar
 
Guys, Thanks for your advice!

I did my research during which I discovered that -

1. Since Wii is in such high demand here at US, English language Wii is simply not available in Palika. Instead they store and mod Japanese version. It displays everything in Japanese till the time game loads up! People have a difficult time navigating through console menus.

2. There are only a handful of Wii games which are considered actually good and worth playing. Rest of it is crap! So there is no much value in availability of free downloadable Wii games.

3. Modding Wii is very difficult even for experienced modders. As cyrux has pointed out, the hardware is designed to resist modding. You can brick Wii easily if not very careful.

4. Playing new games like Mario Galaxy can update console's firmware which can screw-up modding.

Considering all factors, I decided to buy it from US. I do not plan to mod my console.

I am happy to announce that I finally managed to buy it today! Using the word "managed" because this item is extremely rare and much sought after here in US. People line up early in the morning when they hear of any shipment arriving in any store!

I have already bought 4 original games. Will buy 2 more!

Wirelessraj, thanks for the Play-Asia link. Now I have option to buy any new good game in future :-)
