Anytime, something functional is removed from a website, I feel it's a step backwards and the associated concern does not value the fact that it's customers using that service. I've seen it happen on certain banking and other business websites as part of their re-design process.
eg: The Citibank website used to give the account balance after each transaction(widhdwawal or deposit) when the account summary was viewed. They no longer do so. It was a very useful feature for me(as I maintain my own record on paper so it helps with the calculation at each step) but many of my colleagues were not too concerned.
I'm not associating it with TE though. Just something I've observed over the years.
