Dear TE Members,
I had a couple of questions about MTNL Triband & Landline and would like you help. I have never used triband so please be patient with me.
I want to go for DSL_Unlimited_495_Combo plan from MTNL.

1) Do i need landline for triband (I think its needed but still asking) ?

2) Are all the plans show inclusive of taxes or taxes extra ?

3) What would be the minimum charge that i have to pay for the landline (excluding internet) ? I saw that 150 is the minimum with only incoming or is there something lower ?

4) What other charges do i have pay for i.e. installation, modem etc ?

5) What is the downtime per day in triband ?

6) Is there any FUP ?

7) Will i be able to stream from various sites without buffering with this connection ?
I will not be using this connection for gaming, downloading from torrents etc. I use it just for surfing and steaming. So its extremely important for me that it does not have much downtime.
Any other info that you would like to share that you think is critical........please do share!!!
Regards,
striker

1. Yes.

2. Taxes extra and 50Rs Per month modem charges extra.

3. For the plan you chose, NONE.

4. Installation charges - cant say, depends on the plan you choose or the current schemes going on. Confirm with your local telecom dealer.

5. I am using it for the last 2 years or so, and no downtime since Feb 2011. Yes, not even a single mintue in the last 7 months.

6. None watsoever.

7. No. At that speed, it will buffer. U will need atleast 1 Mbps connection for SD videos. For 720P and higher resolution videos, you will need even faster connection.

And dont worry about downtime, they are not frequent and dont take long to fix. In the past 2 years, total downtime for me is around 1 week or so, which is pretty acceptable i guess.

Hope it helped.

my advise to u if u are going to stream and surf then best plan if u don't mind paying a bit more would be the DSL UNLIMITED 1333 PLAN. This plan gives u 1mbps at day and 2mbps at night from 8pm to 8am and 2mbps on weekends too. I have been using it ever since its been rolled out and best for streaming. Barely any buffering and works well with youtube and other streaming services.

thanks a lot vishalk for the reply.

Price is a big factor for me since i don't have a budget for expensive internet. I am trying to get something decent for under Rs 600. I even considered Reliance Broadband but not so sure since there is mixed opinion about login and dialer and wifi config.

Btw....rep added!

I'm using the 495 combo plan for a while now, almost 2 years i think. it's a pretty vfm plan, even more so than the 395 320k plan + landline rental even if it's the min 150 incoming only. as vishalk said, streaming will not work, you will need atleast 1mbps for that. I get about 55kB/s download speeds at night and about 40 during the night hours. That's more than 200mb per hour at night and 150mb/hour during the day which is almost overkill - running out of stuff to download these days.

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

p.s. for Rs. 616/ month total including taxes and 25 free calls, nothing can bet this plan i think, since OP did mention low budget for internet.

they charge 10% tax on your bill, Airtel also charges 10% tax on the bill.

why don't you go for Airtel they have better plans in reasonable price.

thanks a lot julian for the answers....now i know i am making the right choice by thinking of going for the same plan as yours.

vaibhav1.....i saw airtel plans and saw 1 mbps and 2mbps speeds but the data cap of 3gb 6gb and such high charges for so small data allowance seemed very unreasonable. I mean...if i stream a few videos from youtube...the entire bandwidth would be consumed within a week....so i don't think airtel is any good for me. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Basically, any broadband plan with unreasonable FUPs makes no sense, thereby excluding failtel (and most 3g plans but that's another topic). I currently download about 80gb a month and have started turning off my pc in the day hours to both save power and also because there doesn't seem to be much to download these days (or the upgraded speeds finish it faster). I think a sensible cap like 300gb/month for a 2mpbs plan would make more sense. Not the single digit crap FUPs we have. I would rather have a slow(er) connection with true unlimited than a blazing-fast but capped conn.

yes you are rite but those plans are for the people who only do little bit surfing. but their are better plans like in 1 mbps plan i like mega 75GB and in 2 mbps plans i have used max 30GB for 1299 and now i upgraded to max 75 GB for only 1599.

and these are the plans you can get.

This is 2mbps plans

Max (10GB, 30GB, 75GB, 150 GB plans at Rs999, 1299, 1599, 1999)

&

This is 1mbps plans

Mega (10GB, 30GB, 75GB plans at Rs899,1499,1999):cool2:

and if you have Beam broadband service in your city then you can get 10mbps speed for 1000 only i think they are giving 30gb download too.:)

thanks again vaibhai1 for the reply.....the plans looks much better with the new ones you stated.....my only wish would be to get something done like in uk where everything is via wifi......and for 800 bucks you get 20mbps and that too unlimited (75% confident that its unlimited).

Those wishes will only remain dreams here in India........ Dont worry we will get there.... by which time 1Gbps net will become the norm in rest of the world & we'll keep dreaming again...... :D
