Security Software Please Recommend a FREE Anti-virus

Black_Hawk

Level I
Hello folks :)

This is actually for my friend. He has on old P4 system and is looking to install a free anti-virus on it. Please recommend a good AV program.

I remember Udit recommending me the free version of Avast a while ago for my system, would that work well on his system? He is using Windows XP (SP3).

Please advice.

Regards,
Black_Hawk

AVG is best, if your friend has an original copy of XP <or if it properly cracked> then the Microsoft Security Essentials is also a good alternative, been using it for a year now and it has protected the system well.

^^ Yes, I agree when I used Avast it was light on the system resources and easy to configure and use. No hassles. Guess I'll tell my friend to get that. :)

I would recommend Avira AntiVir. Pretty light on system and good detection rates too. I have been using it on an AMD 3000+ system for last 4 years, never faced any issue.

I recommend the following:

* Antivir Avira: Strongest detection engine, does not miss detection. Free to use, but it displays ads some time to time.

* MSE:Works perfectly, using it from past 2years. what more great is that you get paid support for free!! Case: I Installed on on my Sister's laptop. working nicely since past 1year. recently she has trouble upgrading from version 1 to newly released version 2. so I asked to open a support case. first MS support team tried to help over email but it didn't work. then someone from their R&D department called on phone and took control of her machine remotely. issue fixed all thanks to premium support for a free product:D

Use Norton Internet Security 2011... its better than any free antivirus trust me... After installing some free antivirus u'll start getting BSOD... So i wudn't suggest u to do that... And free antivirus detects clean files as viruses also (False Positive)

Norton 360 5.0 90 Days Trial Download link: Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton 360 - Norton Official US Store

Norton Internet Security 2011 90 Days Trial Download Link: Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton 360 - Norton Official US Store

Norton Internet Security is very light on system.. it has feature like pulse update within every 3 to five minutes antivirus gets updated... A great Firewall which doesn't interfere while gaming... In simple words just use it u wud definately love it... :)

Um

where did you get that?

"Free antivirus reports False positives", but don't paid antivirus does so too?

"Free antivirus gives you BSOD". which free antivirus are you talking about?

i agree NIS 2011 is a great antivirus, but we have much better free alternatives now (Avira Antivir, Avast)

If u'll compare Free Antivirus False Detection Rate vs. Norton Internet Security False Detection Rate... Norton's False Detection rate is very low as compared to free antiviruses... Just google "free antivirus giving BSOD"... And BTW let me be specific AVG antivirus is the one who made so many PC's unusable... It deletes system files... U can google about this too... i've read this so thats y i am sharing it here... And as far as Free Antiviruses vs. Paid Antiviruses are concerned Paid antiviruses are any day better...

And the only free antivirus which OP can trust is MSE like Gaurish has suggested...

AVG is next to sh** i agree,

but this doesn't apply to other free antiviruses like Avira ,Avast

using a paid antivirus doesn't make your system more secure, but choosing the right antivirus and firewall combination does

my advice would be Avira Antivir Personal coupled with Comodo Firewall

which should be enough for op's needs

Avast 6.......

More trouble showed up when we tried to clean the system of the threats avast! uncovered during a scan and one of them was a false positive for us, detected as a potentially unwanted program. Upon applying the actions the application crashed. Further attempts with different threats did not cause the same behavior, though.

@OP, better stick to the one which you prefer. here everyone will suggest according to their personal experience.

^^^ But Black_Hawk is not a newbie, he is old enough to determine which AV is better and which is not. I wrote that post because every now and the you will see a similar thread. Which is better AV? Which is better Media player and so on...
