Dear All,

I have a old compaq laptop which has 2x256MB RAM. I need to upgrade the ram (max 2x1GB supported) so that I can use the laptop as an alternative machine for 6 months after which I will go for a new lappy.

but I do not know which ram is compatible...also, should I buy new or used ram..?
pls suggest location/online store from where to buy so that I get a good deal...
Thanks in Advance..

There's your answer right away. You need DDR (not DDR2, or DDR3) RAM, in laptop form-factor (SODIMM).

The obtaining part isn't going to be easy on you. DDR has been long obsolete, so there's no way you'll be able to get it new. Added to that is the additional headache of its size (SODIMM). Even getting DDR2 won't be so easy nowadays.

Put a post in the "Want to Buy" section. Scour the markets/classifieds on TE and other forums whether anyone is selling DDR RAM in SODIMM factor. You might also want to check if Ebay has anything. I'd also suggest getting in touch with local laptop repairshops to check if they have any spares.
