hello there

guys i am planning to buy a multi-function printer.

have no idea about the various brands and their pros and cons.

from threads, got to know that best ones are HP and Canon, in terms of quality and running costs.

please suggest few options to choose from from your own experiences guys.....

update : here is what i need :

my mistake. should had specified :

color; under 5 K (so i hope it will be only inkjet) ; require only printing and scanning ; for student use ; good quality but running cost much more important.

Well since you are low on budget . Only Inkjet Colour MFD will suffice your need, as usual I will recommend Hp AIO . I have used a lot of printer .. and still have 1410 as my primary printer :) Hp has gr8 linux support too .. The new F4100 series suites your budget and needs too HP Deskjet F4100 All-in-One series overview - HP Home & Home Office products .. the performance of Hp printer is gr8.. the only problem is that the cost of new cartridges is way too high :( and one cannot refill more than 4-5 time :|

You're choice will basicallly boil down to HP or Canon budget model MFDs(maybe Epson also). IMO, higher models are not worth considering given that all printers fail over time if not properly cared for.
I had the foll. choices HP F4185, C4288 and Canon MP145 or MP228. I settled for the HP F4185. Here are my observations.

Pros:
1) Compact compared to the Canon models.
2) Paper feed and output is from the front side only making it convenient.
3) Love the black and white/colour one touch photocopying function without PC(although to be fair, this will be there on all MFDs).
4) Comes with 2 black cartridges + 1 colour cartridge.

Cons:
1) HP printer software is bloatware. Is not recommended on old systems(I used my old celeron 1.7Ghz v2623 compaq laptop and it did not install. It crashed the laptop.)
2) Introductory print cartridge capacity is very poor(3 ml). I don't remember how much Canon's cartridges capacity is(15 ml I think??).
3) Low page print output. I think my first black cartridge gave me some 100 pages with a lot of draft mode(least ink used) printing though. I'm on my 2nd black cartridge.

I got a canon mx308 for my needs, most of them being college stuff. it's excellent for meee! :D But I got it at around Rs. 6500(hard to find deals in punjab). But you can get a better deal with it if you are in south.

Edit: Canon mx308 has 17ml cartridges afaik.

i am really confused guys....which one to buy....

so cost wise, i think canon is gona be my choice....among various models of canon, can somebody please guide me :

thinking of following (after comparison from compareindia.com)

Canon - Pixma MP160 or Canon - Pixma MX308 or Canon - Pixma MP145 or Canon - Pixma MP228

can somebody please guide me among these ?

Canon rocks dude !

I've been using my Canon MP180 for quite some time now..
home use basically but quite a lot of printing every now and then..
And the ink cartridges are still running strong, just down by one level !
the print quality is freaking amazing...u won't believe its an inkjet!
the scanning & copy(photocopy) is gr8 too !

The mp160 is basically the same as mp180 but smaller,no mem. card reader and deprived of few nifty features..
the MP145 & MP228 are basically cosmetic upgrades to the mp160 & mp180 as far as i know and among the only budget canon mfd's being sold..

The only disadvantage is it's speed..(built-in memory about 64kb) as opposed to hp's (32mb)...
but this just affects the initializing(processing) time and once it starts printing, the paper literally pops out !! quite fast..
if its for home use you would never regard this as a problem..

but if u do intend to use the printer for official purposes, then by all means get the faster hp 41xx series mfd...

Canon's are a bit more expensive compared to HPs but HP makes up for that by ridiculously pricing their ridiculously small cartridges! 3ml for 900~1000 bucks..plz! canon cartridges are expensive too but are definitely worth it,with about 15ml of ink in std. cartridges..
having used my printer for many months now,i'm sure the cartridges will last for many more months to come(1 year +)

then comes the document feeding: canon's have the std. top auto feed as opposed to hp's bottom feeding ,sometimes leading to paper jams..

so as far as canon mfd's (atleast my mp180) are concerned:

pros:
+well built
+great ink cartridges(lasts really long)
+lot of nifty features onboard
+nice & easy to use software bundled
+amazing prints(seriously!)
+scans are good enough !!
+fullfledged mem. card reader
+direct pictbridge port
VFM !
cons:
-a bit bulky
-slow processing of print data
-tad expensive comparatively
-cartridges are quite expensive too

hope this helped..
