Hey guys,

I just moved to a room in Kalbadevi because I've started studying at St. Xavier's in Mumbai. I need an internet connection in my room but because I'm new to Mumbai, I thought I would ask you guys for help.

Now, I'm a heavy downloader. I frequently download HD movies, TV shows, games etc. and hence I will obviously go for Unlimited plans. My budget is less than/equal to 650/month.

The people who lived in the room before I came in had Hathway it seems; there's a Hathway cable done right upto & inside my room. But I went to their website and saw their FUP - they cap speeds to 256Kbps after very measly limits... which is why I'm hesitant to go for them.

I would love to get any MTNL TriBand plans (love their 599 and 666 unlimited plans) but will they give me a connection if I don't have an MTNL landline? Because I don't... and won't be getting one.

I don't know much about other providers here... but I have no problem with even local providers, provided they give good speed unlimited plans with no cruel FUP at the price I specified above.

So, which ISPs would you guys recommend? Also, just as an aside, how much time will they take for installation?

Some options nivyah,fivenet,pacenet.
Check for their availability in your area and get one of those.
Though the 1st preference will go to 5net.

choices in ur area, pacenet, ecatt, 5net all of these provided by local cable operators. MTNL will only provide u on the landline as it is a DSL service and hence needs a landline to use the service. Other options, TATA indicom photon and likes of other providers providing on USB sticks.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses!

1) Fivenet and ecatt don't seem to have websites, so I don't know how to contact them. Can anyone post their phone number here?

2) I went to Pacenet's site and noted down their number. Will call them tomorrow. They haven't posted their plans online so can't say anything for now. How's their service?

3) Nivyah has a nice website and great plans. The 512Kbps Unlimited plan with double speed at night is perfect for me. I'll call them tomorrow and ask if they are available in my area. How is their service?

4) I hope none of the 4 ISPs you have suggested have terrible FUPs or anything. Please!

5) Shame about MTNL. Ruled out for me, then.

Thanks for all the help so far. Keep the recommendations coming! :-)

^ Fivenet's website is here Five Network Solution (India) Ltd

BTW, fivenet, pacenet etc are provided by cable operators and the service varies from operator to operator. MTNL is good overall and quite decent plans too, if you don't mind getting a landline. I've their landline only for this purpose.

In Fivenet, they have their own DC++ hub with hundreds of users and 10s of TBs of content to download at LAN speeds.

1) I called Fivenet today. They don't have coverage in Kalbadevi. So that's out.

2) Called Nivyah but no one picked up. Will try again tomorrow, at an earlier time.

3) Called Pacenet. They do cover the area and a salesperson will call me tomorrow to talk about plans and tariffs.

4) I still haven't figured out the website/contact details for Ecatt. Anyone, help please!

5) If I file an application for an MTNL landline, how much time will it take to get the landline? After that, if I apply for TriBand, how much time will that take?

You can apply for both together and will take about a week to 10 days normally.

Okay guys, here is the update. I have two options in front of me. Please help me decide...

1. Apply for an MTNL landline and internet connection.

Plan: No combo is suitable for me, so free calls/minutes is not a factor. I only see the 599 unlimited plan (512Kbps in the day, 750Kbps in the night) as apt for my needs.

Time: 7-10 days

2. Apply for Pacenet cable and internet connection.

Plan: A great plan of 499 (512Kbps in the day, 1Mbps in the night) and I will also get a discount on the sum total, i.e., after cable plan is added too.

Time: 10 days

A lot of it depends on the service/quality of the two providers. Since I'm new to Mumbai, I don't know anything about this. Can you guys tell me how it is?

what about mtnl 3g 750 plan? then if you shift places while studying, you can still take it with you.

That would be 750 plus taxes, right? The price is a *little* too high for just myself. Also, is it truly unlimited? Or does it have some FUP and/or speed capping?

And since I've spent a lot of time, money and effort shifting to this new place (also, I will it have for atleast 1yr, if not more), portability isn't a huge factor for me.

But what can you tell me about MTNL's service? Is it so much better than Pacenet so as to justify the extra expense for a plan that's not as good?

^MTNL 750 3G Plan is indeed truly unlimited .. But u need to invest in datacard (arnd 2 to 3k) and HSDPA activation (450rs), Guess it would be out of your budget.. Plus the plan is for just 6 months..

Also you can check my signature for MTNL 3G speed.. arnd 2 MBPS

Before you make a decision just check if your pacenet connection is available with DC ++ support. If yes Then you should avoid mtnl and get the pacenet connection.
It should suffice your daily download needs.

Okay, I'll call the Pacenet people and ask them about their Cable + Internet combo plans and discounts. Can anyone, ANYONE tell me what their service is like?

bro,first of all

Welcome to Mumbai, Hope u have a nice stay here and Enjoy Life!!

internet service depends on Cable valas operating in particular area.

one can not comment with Confidence and guarantee about quality of service, for eg. before getting Sify Broadband, I read lot of reviews & heard no. of incidents about POOR service and Connectivity issues but still i went ahead & get the connection, believe ME i used Sify for more than 2yrs & i never faced single problem(i'm hardcore downloader just like u, monthly usage is more than 60GB) neither in connectivity nor in speed. in fact at time of maintenance company(Yes!! sify itself not cable vala) used to send SMS that internet will be closed for few hours of day due to work maintenance"

This is what happens today i'm saying I never faced problems with Sify, i can not guarantee that u will not face problems too, because it depends on various factors, cable customers may face issues like cutting of cables by third party(obv. they don't charge u for it), problem at their control room, switch failure due heavy lightning etc.

one can surely share his/her experience but its up to you to decide & LUCK factor is there too :)

I wish u luck to get good & prompt ISP

Hey,

Thanks for the help, man. Fivenet has told me they aren't available in my area. Pacenet/Spacenet/Spectranet's plans aren't that good. Nivyah is yet to get back to me. I have lodged a request with Hathway asking about details. I have also lodged a request with Sify asking about details.

With Hathway and Sify, the only problem is their FUPs. If they hadn't existed, I would have signed up in a flash. Even now, if I get confirmation that they aren't strictly followed, ie, speed isn't halved after a certain limit, I would love to take them on.

But, as of now, MTNL looks like the best option for me. But even with them, the plans aren't really great. I could take the 495 Unlimited Combo plan but the speeds for that are kind of bad (Day: 320Kbps, Night: 512Kbps). I kind of like the Unlimited Plans @ 555 and @ 599, but they aren't Combo. So even if I take the most basic landline plan, the cost will be somewhere around 750-800, which is quite a lot. Which is why I'm confused. :|

really bad :(

if u would be staying in Dadar-Mahim area,u could have get Nivyah offered by cablevala- UL 2mbps day, 4mbps night @500/-month that too 95% uptime
torrent speeds 270kbps day n 500-550kbps night

Friend of mine got an mtnl wi-fi connection for 555 or 599. Not sure about the price.
He gets 512 kbps during the day and 1mbps at night.
I think this might suit you since you wont have to pay the rentals for landline.

I know about this plan! But are you sure you don't have to purchase a landline for this one? Could you please ask your friend if having an MTNL landline is required for this wi-fi plan.

Maybe your friend already has an MTNL landline at his house and didn't need to get one separately? I have just moved to Mumbai, am living alone and will have to actually purchase a landline (& pay its rental) if I want Tri-Band, as far as I know.

also, that Nivyah plan seems superb. I'll call them again and ask them what's the status on my feasibility request. I called up the number on their website and am proceeding via that channel. Am I doing the right thing or would you suggest something else?
