Please suggest point and shoot camera

Hello all,

A friend is looking to buy a camera, and these are this requirements

He is looking to buy it from the US (Amazon most likely)

His sweetspot budget would be $250-$300, rest is in the quoted text.

don't mind spending upto $ 400-450 also if it's worth it ... but i don't think i'll need to given that my requirements (given below) are fairly modest

key requirements

point and shoot
quality of pics, esp in night / low light ... and auto mode should work well ... no patience to customize and put manual settings etc. this is the most important.
optical zoom, image stabilization, wide angle lens n all very welcome
size - compact is better, though bigger is ok if other features rock

HD video and all i don't really care ... but if it's there, then awesome

other stuff u suggest dude ... i need the camera to be simple and yet work well.

Please help #ALPHA17 @Jakob

Thanks

Looking at point that he needs one which is good low light performer, something like Canon G or S series camera would be good, as he is ready to expand budget.
Something like Canon G15 or S110, expensive here but might be cheaper in US

Thanks for the response, but arent most mordern cameras able to give good pics at night / low light, I noticed the S110 for about $430 odd, what is special about these 2, do they have a more powerful flash or something?

I have very little knowledge in this domain, so just want to make sure we arent spending without need.

Thanks again!

Yes, most modern cameras are giving good low light performance these days. But then, its that from what standard you are comparing. People using DSLR are still talking about low light performance of various new models, just because their standard of comparison is higher.
G15 or S110 have bigger sensor than usual compact cams and provide bigger aperture openings. This results in much better low light performance than other compact cams. Not to mention latest model have some exciting new features like wifi etc also.

Since you made emphasis on low light quality, i suggested these. Else, any $300 cam could satisfy your needs of general snap taking stuff

The Olympus XZ-1 is in the $250-300 range, has a fast lens for low light and going by reviews is also easy to operate.
