Pls suggest alternative wireless router setup for Airtel broadband

Hi,

Thanks to fellow TE members I have wireless router setup at home that I use with Airtel broadband.

My current setup is -
- Airtel's Beetel 220BX modem setup on "bridged" mode. Default IP address changed to 192.168.0.1
- Modem is connected to Internet port of Wireless Router.
- Wireless router is Linksys WRT54GS. Its IP address is 192.168.1.1.
- Wireless router is set as PPPoE dialer. DHCP is disabled
- My PC is connected via network cable to LAN port of Wireless router.
- PC's IP address is 192.168.1.2. Its gateway is 192.168.1.1
- I use wireless connection to connect my laptop to router
- Laptop's IP address is 192.168.1.3

This setup is working fine without any problems.

My only problem is that I rarely use my laptop at home. So wireless router is always on for no reason at all. Ideally what I would like is that I turn on wireless router only when I really need to access internet on my laptop.

I therefore requests fellow experts to suggest me an alternative setup that will allow me to shut down Wireless router when I am not using my laptop while still allowing me to continue using internet on my PC. In other words I want to use my Wireless Router as Wireless Access Point on need basis only.
Please let me know if you can think of a way.

not worth the headache...that router is designed and meant to be on 24X7..

is there something specific you expect to gain by switching off wireless?

No real objectives! It just irritates me that Linksys router is on for no reason. Major irritants -
- It wastes electricity
- Shortens router's life (does it?) without actual use
- Emits totally unnecessary radiation (does it?). I have a small child living with me so I am a bit concerned over this.

- It wastes electricity

around 15 -20 W , or the same as what is colloquially (though incorrectly) referred to as a zero-watt bulb

Not really...the passive electronic components in a router should easily run for 10+ years with 24X7 uptime which is more than the duration you will use it for before an upgrade

- Emits totally unnecessary radiation (does it?). I have a small child living with me so I am a bit concerned over this.

The tx power of a router is ~50mW at peak which is ~ 1/20th of a GSM phone...considering that the phone is kept right next to your head while being used, the exposure from a wireless router would be 1/100thif not less than a regular cellphone

Thank you guys for clearing my doubts and answering my concerns! This is really helpful information.

I guess I now will stay with my current setup and simply keep the wireless radio disabled for the time I am not using it.
