Hi,

I am based in Delhi and currently on Airtel's Home 999 plus plan (unlimited 256 kbps in daytime and 512 kbps in nighttime). I am still not sure whether its best plan for me.

I am a working man and out during daytime except weekends. I get back home in evening, turn on computer and browse for 1-2 hrs and again shut it down. In the night around 10:30 PM I again start my computer and then start my downloads and let the computer run all night. In the morning I wake up at around 8:30 AM and turn off internet as well as computer after checking out my emails and night's downloads.

On weekends I spend additional 1-2 hrs on internet in daytime.

This is all. Do you think I should switch to a different Airtel plan? I would really like to boost up speeds of my night downloads. I am gladly willing to spend upto Rs 1500/- per month on broadband.

Please let me know your views.

night downloads even on tata will remain the same i.e. 512 Kbps

u can try downloading day and night on the plan u got....but thats it

no BSNL in delhi so no 2Mbps speeds

I have similar usage pattern as you and i too got the 999 plan.

What i do is i even switch on the PC (minus the monitor ofcouse) and let the downloads even in daytime (while i work at office). Afterall, 30kbps is a not a speed to be wasted.

The 999 plan is the best because its *UNLIMITED*, none of the other faster plans offer unlimited. Unless you want to meter your usage then i think its best to stick with what you have.

I heard they are not offering the 999 anymore to new users. So if you are not happy with the one you move to, you may not be able to switch back.

If you have a laptop you can keep that on all the time and the current draw is much lower compared to a PC.

@ rshri,

me in same shoes as yours......lol , i.e. same plan, same working hours, same confusion about internet plan and downloading.

what i figured out is that:
The way 1000 rs we are spending is not right.
figure it out, we download movie and games gigs of data.
and the time spent/wasted on pc is alot (just so that the download is happening),

@ dceite,
consider the electricity wasted/consumed in that.

Take my count,
I'm thinkin of shifting to 250 2mbps 1GB of plan from the next month,
so 250 +99 (modem rent, right now in home 999 plan it's waived) + 12.5% tax
= 392.625 ~ 395 approx.

1000 + tax = 1125.

so 1125-395 = 730 left + 500 rs approx (electricity saved dut to non-use of pc for downloading purpose ) = 1230

now go to palika or something like that,
but DVD's and games @ Rs.40 each or more discounted rate, as you will be buying more.
take the rate as @rs. 40

buy 10 DVD's movies/ month( 7 latest and some 3 old our choice) = 400
+ 5 DVD games @ 40 = 200

total =600 rs,
now 1230-600 = 630 rs still saved,
now in all,
time saved,
money saved,
electricity saved.
no frustration in waiting for the 1 gig of movie or 3.2 gig of game to get downloaded completely in days or so.

PS: This has taken me a lot of time to write...............phew,
but i guess it's of more use to me than anyone else !

Result: I'm shifting to new plan from next month.

well if that works for u thats great but the thrill is in getting the stuff immediately not wait for it to come to the market after a week or fortnight...

For people in Delhi it could be an option but for others who are not from Metro's its a problem.... No new English movie released for ages.. for all those released they are dubbed in Hindi... Takes the whole fun apart with ridiculous dialogue & voice overs....

No multiplexes to digg in.... Also all those games cost a bomb here ~Rs.200-300 for DVD games... "coz people are still stuck with CD's.... & with an increase in CD count they charge more....

So UL-999 makes sense for heavy downloads & unexpected usage otherwise people can easily get ~128 kbps UL or a lesser plan... but for your own safety or should I say for your pocket's sake if anyone is into downloading.. stay clear of capped plans... even for more speed...:bleh: :bleh:

Now how will you go to palika....on a bike or bus or maybe a car....the travel expense....the time you will have to spend on going to the shop .........what if the quality of the print of the movie you purchased from palika.....some times the dvd is a blank one.....so there are many reasons not to buy from palika and better to download from net.....

if a computer is on download with monitior off state it will be consuming about 150-200 watts in ideal state....so...

175 watts x 24 = 4.2 KVA/hr
one unit of electrcity is for Rs 4.5 per KVA/hr
so daily bill will be 18.9 or we can say Rs 19....
for a month it will be Rs 570.

Now decide which is better bet....

I would never change from home 999plus plan....
