Point and click for 16K

form factor? sx100is is slightly bulky.. but good. and it costs that much.. With bill that is..

without bill it should be around 12k..

you looking to get something with bill/without bill?

with bill, and warranty period is an advantage. Canon cams have 2 yr warranty only...

Form factor should not be too bulky...

you could ask udit about this cam. he has it..

and yeah,, i remember it being for 16k odd about 2 months back at alfa. With proper bill and 2 years warranty

I think the best point & click U can pick up within 16k will be the New Sony W-150. I recently picked up one- it is 15.5k with bill. Advantage is its compactness- it is virtually pocket able, has excellent lens from 30 mm ( w-i-d-e) to 120mm and has very good movie mode. with HD out.

Sony no-no. Oversharp colours due to aggressive post processing, heightened contrast for the same reason. Also lots of image compression i.e. aliasing.

Canon. A720IS, SX100IS. I'd prefer the A720IS, as its relatively lower light performance (ISO 200, 400) is better than the SX100IS. Buy a fast sandisk extreme 3 card too. Look for at least 133x cards.

btw with bill is useless as service is expensive and unless you drop or wet your camera nothings going to happen to it.

service is free... within the warranty period.

unless if you manage to bork your cam by running your car over it that is

He wants small?

get something in the Canon Ixus series

a 16k budget will get him near top of the line Ixus with optical IS et al

On the other end of the spectrum..

If he is OK with big but just wants the camera to be Capable & have a great zoom?

Get the Canon S5 or the Sony H7/H9

Vandy, AFAI can recollect (though I may be incorrect), the SX is supposed to be the budget alternative for the S series and since this guy's budget is good enough to cover the S, what point going for a SX?

I would disagree with that. If you can afford it, get it with warranty. Things do go wrong sometimes, and a warranty will always help then ;) Sure, only 1% might have something go wrong, but if urs is in that 1%? Its insurance, if u can afford it, get it :)

Her is an example.

- A Canon Ixus 870IS in grey - 15000

- With B&W - 23000

- Probability of device conking off in 1st year - 1%, hell make it 5%

- Cost of repair - 5K?, or maybe make it 10K

so the cover the risk of a 5% probability of losing 10K , I'll pay 8K in insurance?... that's the most expensive insurance I have ever heard of

Alternative calculation

Cost In gray including risk of repairs: 15K + 5% of 10K (repairs) = 15.5K

Cost with b&w : 23K

Now tell me why I should fill Canon India's coffers when those jokers are still trying to sell their cameras with infinitely higher margins than their operations elsewhere despite the fact that Digicams in India are already a mass market product (high margins are jutifiable on niche items, but not on high volume commodities)

Now that does make sense if put that way :) Point taken. Mind you, if u can afford it, some ppl will still go for it for peace of mind etc, for the rest of us, grey it is (or the US if you can source it, even cheaper :ohyeah:)
