Buying from US.

7 MP and above, point & shoot, sleek and small to fit in the pocket easily. has to have good indoor shots. budget not an issue.

narrowed it down to

canon SD 750 / 800 /850 IS

Sony W90

any other suggestions ?

budget plz...

US or IND.. nothing will go on without budget...

but as u want around 7-8 mp

check this out - NIKON COOLPIX S51C 8.1MP W

I tried out my friends Cybershot T200 over the weekend. Its compact and takes really good shots. Is quite compact (but a bit heavy). UI is mainly through the touchscreen. It felt good for the short time I used it(the touchscreen thing), but not sure how it is for owning it.

Actually in real life none of the above will be very suitable. Sports photography will include lots of high speed action and will require shooting at high ISO- 800 & even above and all these cams will fail. I think the ones to look at will be Fuji FinePix F40fd and F50fd., these are famous for their capability to shoot in available light- fast action at ISO 800 or even 1600.

^ Did he mention sports photography?? anyways, that would need a different animal altogether. 40D with high fps and is relatively cheaper than its class rival.

I think the OP is looking for a pocket cam for gen use.

thanks to everyone...

A720 is a bit bulky , so cant consider it.

Nikon S51c seems good but a lot of bad reviews after checking reviews online. hmmm

found the fuji f50fd a good contender. either this , sony w90 or canon sd750IS ... confused lol . time for more research

i would rate canon over nikon in dig. cameras..personal opinion only..

850IS is good has a image stabilizer

regarding sports photography i am not sure as for high speed in motion shots you need something compatible with extremeIII cf cards which are fast..of course ..if one was not talking of carrom, cheess as sports

Ok

Here we go.

1. Indoor shots the Fuji F50fd is the king by a far far margin to any competitor. The only thing which can outdo it is the F31fd which doesn't have the CCD-shift Image Stabilization which the F50fd possesses.

So for Indoor: Fuji F50fd>> Sony=Canon

2. Sports shots. You do NOT need a fast card or anything, what you really need is a camerawith a really fast burst mode and super-fast focussing ability. Outside of dSLRs and bulky cams, everything else is a compromise really. The long-zooms (10x+) cameras are good at this in outdoor/daylight sports, but none of the compacts are great at it. But I'll not touch upon this at all since it looks like none of the other posts read your original post which doesnt mention any sports at all. :)

At ISO 800/1600, both the other cams are useless while the Fuji is baby-bottom-smooth at ISO 400 and very good at 800/1600 (for its sensor size).
The Fuji also comes with a superb 2.7" hi-res 230k pixel LCD screen.

I'd go with Sony or Canon (am giving equal marks here) if you want a faster-focus, little faster-in-operation, better battery life and more-user-friendly camera overall. But not if you want low-noise images.

For me, the Fuji F50fd is the choice here.

PS: I love dpreview for their reviews. Here's the review for the F50> Fujifilm FinePix F50fd Review: 17. Conclusion: Digital Photography Review

I just picked a SD870IS a couple of weeks ago.... (IXUS 860)

This was a replacement for the Fujifilm Z5 (which by the way is a very capable camera)

My other comparison points for this Cam are a Canon S2IS, Sony H1, a Canon Rebel XT (with the default lens)

If I was going out on a laidback trip, I would take the Rebel XT

If I was going out on a sightseeing trip, I would take the Sony H1

but If I was going out for an active outing or heading out for a party or for any other normal day usage, I'll anyday pick the SD870

The quality of the optics , IS and sensor are as good as the much bigger and bulkier Sony H1/Canon S2

I was more than surprised to see daylight pics turn out as good as the other cams here

High ISO bad light shots were as good as the Canon S2/Sony H1

The flash range is obviously shorter than the others given its size but it is an amazingly capable camera for its size..

In fact if I was forced to choose just 1 Cam out of the lot described above, I'd take the SD870IS

If you planning to picjk any other SD/IXUS series models, make sure though that you get a model with OIS

OT, but Frankly, my bigggest disappointment so far has been the Rebel XT...You can term it user error if you want but I really didn't feel that except for those rare ocasions when you need a high ISO shot and have adequate time to frame the shot properly, any regular user would really obtain better results with it ....

In fact when you want to grab a quick shot, the Sony H1/Canon S2/Canon SD870 consistently delivered better results

Couldn't have been happier

yup czar , looking at the canon with IS . how much did you get the SD870IS for.

also considering the canon sx100 IS as im getting a great deal for it... not sleek but i think i can manage.

The Fuji has IS too. But the Canon is a more conventional choice, I guess. The Fuji's SuperCCD sensor (though a pixel-crammed 12mp unlike the awesome 6mp in the F31fd) makes a LOT of difference to anything above ISO200.

Read the review in my post above. In case you still want to go ahead with the Canon, well it's your choice and it won't disappoint if you don't print any night shots too big.

Ah well.

beware tho..the video recording quality of th sx100 is known to be crap :P

the photo quality is supposed to be as good/ even better than the S5IS :ohyeah:

Puns note that none of the IS systems work very well. So with the SX100 you won't really be able to use more than 4x optical before you require a tripod particularly indoors.

In case u want really compact the realism of colors on any Canon will satisfy. Check out the SD850IS, 870IS, 900IS, 950IS, the entire series. I've tested two of these models, and the older ixus 60 about 2 years back. The new ones are especially good. Though the A650IS and A720IS would be better, but you want a smaller fottprint.

I'd say look at dpreview and check out which of the models fits your budget and your spec requirements. Cause performance wise they're all good.

finally decided to go for the sx100. got it for a nice price of 250 with 2 2gb sd cards. i really liked the sample pictures of the sx100 on most review sites and the video quality is good enough.
