Police verification after receiving passport

Does this happen?I received my renewed passport last week.I was a little surprised that I got it without any police verification since this was for a new address, but didn't care much.But I got a call from a constable who had come over to my house when I was in office.He asked me to bring Rental agreement, passport sized photographs and address proff document.I have submitted only the bank letter as address proof but the contsable insisted on a rental agreement(which has expired).

So wat are the documents required for police verification?I should get ready to haggle on the bribe I think.:@
 
don't worry. I have seen a similar instance when police came for verification after receiving the passport. They can't do much now but still better to go to police station with required docs. On rent agreement tell him that you are in the process of renewing it.
 
I can go ahead and give them the required docs that they asked including the old rental agreement.What if they dont agree?What if I refuse to let's say pay them a bribe?I already ahve the passport, can they create a problem anyway?
 
Yup they can .I got my passport before police verification coz it was through tatkal.They called me 3 times i did not bother coz i had passport ,later they visited my place and asked me to come to the police station.

I went with all documents(no bribe) and was later told by them that they have authority to put a check on ur passport which will stop u from flying.
 
In my experience, the police want to verify that you have been at that address for the entire period of one year. Therefore, any address proof from last year for eg: a BSNL telephone bill, driver's license, Income Tax return acknowledgment etc. would suffice.

Your expired rental agreement along with your bank statement should serve as sufficient proof to confirm your whereabouts for a year. Bribe is another matter. They don't need proofs to make a fuss. They will simply as Rs 100/- to Rs 300/- as stationary charges.
 
Dont even think of offering bribe you may get screwed for sure.

You can very well be true to them and say your agreement has expired and you are in renewing process. But best would be to contact your landlord right now or the agent and apply for the agreement. Else they may easily dig you further and might suspect you bothered to renewed the agreement right now just for the sake of passport.
 
Problem is that Rental agreement, BSNL bill etc are all in my brother's name.Only my Airtel connection is in my name.Voter's ID, PAN card, Driver's licence all have diff bangalore addresses.

Now for them it sounds a big jholy scenario.....

Passport should be best applied in your hometown and esp. where you stay with your family. Thus in this way, police dont trouble or ask for any xyz documents.
 
Verification done.Didn't pay a single paisa to them.Rental agreement, photos and bank statement worked just fine.

I gotta tell you guys, this passport renewal process was a breeze as far as general delays are concerned.
 
Didn't have to.He never asked, I never paid.He did make me wait though.Some senior traffic inspector walked in with his family's passport work.He kept me and another old man waiting.
 
damn, I applied for re-issue tatkal, but they put it as police verification as pre-check. It has been 9 days and till no one has called me. I don't know why it's called takal :(
 
Good to hear that everything went well.

Normally, they ask something when you do not have proper documentation but as per law, even if you do not have any kind of proof that you have been residing at a particular location since one year, they have to take a signed statement from two neighbours who would confirm your residence at the said location since one year.

This whole "confirming your whereabouts for 1 year" thing was a requirement some two years ago. Nowadays, it is reported that these processes are more relaxed so maybe, they don't bother so much about it. Things are supposedly improving.

And no, the lease doesnt have my name...what else can I use for address proof?
 
BSNL bill, voter's id, bank statement and letter etc work fine I think.Check out passport offce site.It's very clearly given there.
 
Same thing happened to me i.e. I got my passport first then after a few days police called me to the station for verification. Actually the verification form is signed by IIC. There he ticks a box which says that passport received at the stated address. Besides, he verifies my signature and photograph. It was smooth process though I had to go to station thrice because twice, IIC had to go out of the station for some urgent work.
 
yeah.It has become very smooth.There was hardly any delay form the Passport department's side.Usually it's the police verification which causes a hitch, fortunately everything was a breeze.
