Hi All...

After my network experiment in this thread

http://www.techenclave.com/networking/need-help-automating-building-home-network-140739.html

I now have 2 PC's, Main PC on Win7 and ServerPC on Windows Home Server 2003.

I now have a port forwarding issue for my server machine.

here is description of problem which I have ..

utorrent shows "red" exclamation mark ,meaning that ether my firewall / port are not configured properly on my router!!!

things did to rectify problem:

on router:
1. opened ports required for utorrent.

Port Forwarding for theUTStarcom WA3002G4A

on pc with WHS:
1. added "utorrent" program to firewall exception list.
2. added ports in firewall exception list.

Still no use.

I have given new ports on each restart of the machine till date. thats like everyday.

Any help will be appreciated.

Check if uTorrent is running on random port on each start. If so, then change settings to run it on one fixed port (anything between 10000-60000) and then forward that port in firewall.

If still this doesn't work then may be have got your IP via DHCP. Port forwarding works by forwarding traffic to single or multiple IP. In this case set your own IP address and forward to that one.

Hope this helps

@kerk..

i have set a static IP and no, random port is unselected. so is the UPnP port mapping...had it selected too..no use..

If u want to do it in simplest manner then add that static IP to DMZ zone :D

Also check on this page that really that port is opened on your router itself or not Open Port Check Tool

Some screenshots will help to solve this quickly :D

The settings i give for port forward each time

Setting1.png

the settings in utorrent.. it shows green icon because i just gave a new one..otherwise it be a round red exclamatory icon

settings2.png

This is my settings in windows firewall...utorrent application and i tried setting a port for TCP and UDP too

This is how it shows on each restart...added the server ip on DMZ too...no use..

anything special for Windows home server 2003??... i did the same setting on Xp and its fine..

Ok... something i havent mentioned earlier...

Utorrent is installed as a service for me...

I just checked the speeds with the webui interface..it looks ok...will report back after testing...

are u running uTorrent on your WinXP also?

If so choose diff port for that. i.e. for WinXP use 30001 port in uTorrent and forward that port to WinXP machine's IP from your router. And use 30002 port for Win2003 in uTorrent and forward it to Win2003 machine.

That test result shows that port forwarding is working from router side. So problem is on internal n/w side only. Also check if u r running any internet security suite or 3rd part firewall.

Hi All....

I was a idiot...i feel ashamed to be a software engineer...Lolz...

I found out the issue at long last...

Well...here goes..

In my WHS the utorrent is installed as a service..so each time when i start the Windows the utorrent is running as a background service..

Each time when i give a new setting, here the new port, the new instance of the utorrent will have the new port and it will work with the green

icon. and on the next restart the service will also be using the same settings i gave last time. but if i opened a new utorrent window the icon will be red.

red denotes some process is already using the same port.

here the service is already using the port. thats why. :). when i set the webui setting i should have realised the webui is the only way i need to use the interface.

so now everything works fine. :)..

been testing for the last 3 days. its working...now my WHS setup is all done.

I set up my old canon ip1000 printer to it. so the WHS acts as my print server too. my dad's been complaing about having to

go to local cafe coz i said no printer driver not Windows 7. ;). I only needed WinXP driver in my WHS. and shared it.

Now its available to all the Systems in the home network. dad can print from downstairs from his laptop. he was impressed...

he thght it was something big. it only took me abt 10 mts. :D....

So thnx all for the great inputs and help...and this brings end to both my network threads... :)

I am thinking wether i should put all my experince into a thread.sort like preview/tut of my small network tango... :D
