Few days back i bot new portable HDD of WD 500GB..

The problem is whenever i plug in my HDD, and copy some files or even watch any video and just after that i tries to eject it, it says "generic drive cannot be stopped now, pls try again later and so" message as if some work is still going on...

And so, as the result i have to unplug my HDD directly..

Why this message is coming and what shud be done to get rid of it??

This happens when windows service or other application services access the HDD, sometime even after writing data onto the HDD, the AV scan the data and thereby the HDD is busy. Sometimes windows also access the HDD even after reading or writing.

@seshu , unlocker is good but in this type of case when you check the hdd with unlocker, it wil say that the hdd is not used, even they windows will prompt this message generic drive cannot be stopped now, pls try again later and so.

A better solution is to after finishing your work with the external hdd, wait for few minutes before trying to eject it, i usually wait for 5-6 minutes before ejecting it :)

And also check if Plug n play service is started and running from services.msc, if its not start it and set it to automatic, i had a similar issue with win xp and yes even after 1 hr of usage, it would still show the same error as you are getting,

And like CA50 mentioned, that is the right procedure to eject, but if that doesnt work, Let us know the operating system and if its XP try the above step
