Possible to get a LCD TV from Singapore?

question you need to ask is if its really worth buying it there and getting it down, espesically since you are looking at a 32" screen

i guess the prices for 32" TVs are in 20s right now, so grey market prices would be cheaper still

howmuch would a 42"/46"or47" cost in grey in India as compared to it in SG?

Agree im not saving that much but its a decent saving. A good 32" TV here costs close to 30k. The same can be bought for about 18k-19k in SG. Bangalore grey market prices arent that good. And it'll come with warranty, so worst case if something happens, i might have to incur a little expense but i can get it fixed. Definitely in case of a 42/46/50 inch tv you save a lot more.

Ok so basically the consensus was to check it in with regular baggage? is that the safest way or can i carry it with me on the plane? Even if i have to hold it with me i dont mind, i can sacrifice a few hours sleep to save 10k

Or how about this, put it in my suitcase, and stuff clothes either side of the tv so that it is well padded and protected? A 32 inch is not that big and i have a sufficiently large suitcase.

^ It's 25,000 per person .So incase it was a big family they can divide the total among members of the family and evade the Duty.

Once while returning from Singapore ,we had bought a O-General Split AV , a 29" TV and some other random electronic stuff. Got through without paying duty .
Having good communication skills , prior experiences and contacts helps as well. If you at the counter looking scared they will surely try to extract maximum duty from you . You need to be smart and confident while speaking to these guys !

Ofcourse if you ran out of luck completely ,no one can help you .

You cannot divide the price of a single item among your family members for calculation of duty from the exemption limit of 25K

No way can you do this, the point of duty free is for taking out of the country. I'm surprised you will even be able to get to this shop from the arrivals lounge.

Errrm you need not do that. Either way, it's quite hard to stow a 32incher (with or without the box) on the overhead luggage compartment. You cant simply leave it on the floor either. :lol:

Bad idea. Bring the TV inside the packaging. It's quite safe - there's no way those guys would toss the box around. Once the packaging is weighed and tagged, have those stickers stuck which states 'Fragile - Handle with Care' on all sides and corners, before it's passed on to the conveyor.

Like I said before, you can have it packed additionally inside a wooden crate to ensure a safer transit.

^At least for the fragile stuff if not a big-arse AC.

I've seen peeps lurking heavy split ACs, 29" CRTs a while back. If the baggage weight-limit is crossed, one can always pass the goods to a fellow commuter who may be travelling light. I've seen passengers do this as well esp. with foreign liquor.

Nah the bangalore duty free shop does not have very good deals on TV's, nor or any other electronics for that matter. In fact their camera prices are just plain ridiculous. Yea ill check out all the options available here before going, if not much of a difference ill pick it up here.

My dad had got an RC aircraft once, and coz its made of balsa wood and fragile he carried it with him on the aircraft(its a six foot long package mind you). He just let it stand near the window for the whole journey

Yea for most airlines its 20kg, unless you fly business or first class. Thats how much i have as well. Googling tells me that 32 inchers are about 12-13kg. So with packaging and stuff i should be below 20

Oh this reminds me of a relative that went on holiday with his wife, two sisters, cpl of their friends plus two nieces. The custom officers face when he told them all 7 women were his sisters was priceless. A most rewarding trip that turned out to be :lol:

BLR_P... A friend of mine bought 32 inch LCds twice from sg @ mustafa. The original packing of the unit is very good. U can also mention to the store guys that u need to take it to India. they will do some additional packing... Dont u worry.

Wooden crates will only take ur luggage weight up and if it crosses the limit, and u end up paying excess baggage charge...... u might as well buy it here;

For most of the IT related products and electronics head to Sim Lim square or the Funan mall. Most Indians hang around at the Mustafa Centre as well. Retails gold, clothing and electronics products such as LCD and home audio systems.
