Power Line Networking

Was looking in to this, is it feasible with US-sourced equipment? They recommend not using voltage converters or powerstrips, as they may interfere with the networking.

Looking to hook up the entire house with this, as running new wires in a 40 y.o. flat just isn't feasible.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Ummm... Wi-Fi is not an option?

US power specs are very different from ours, so I highly doubt it will work here. From Aus or Jap, maybe, or Britain, a 200-240V country.

I have once installed power line networking when i was in US. but data transfer speed was not that good.

I doubt that it will work here.

Would suggest going for wi-fi instead of the PLN, the only place where i see the PLN feasible is if you want network access at location where installing a Wi-fi, or wired network is difficult or way too expensive & cumbersome. Else WI-FI is the best option. Also the fact that price of this devices have been heavily reduced & at the same time the speed and range has gone better and better. As compare to the time when PLN was launched for using existing power cables instead of rewiring the entire house.

Signal issues with some walls :(. Connections keep dropping, even with DD-WRT on my WHR HP G54 and the TX power up to 200mW.

I may be being a blockhead here, but I get signal through a four-storey building right down to the ground floor (signal is weak here) with a single WRT54G2 placed on the top floor. And stock firmware. My N85 browses flawlessly three floors down, the signal has to push through four layers of solid concrete to get there. You might want to try a new router and see if that helps, before pushing for power line equipment.

However, IIRC in Mumbai my router was not quite as effective, just two walls away the signal would drop off rapidly. I am assuming that the environment is much more noisy there than in Cal, and your best option may be to actually install wires :(

Hey, not discouraging you or something but increasing the TX power does not help in anyway, in fact it creates more noise. And trust me DD-WRT is a joke, that guy just made the firmware to rake in money. Most of his builds are only filled with bugs which they never end up fixing.

Why not hook up another cheap wifi router as a repeater? Will definitely be cheaper than getting the PLN setup.

Gotcha.
@Cranky - probably the case. Sucks :(

Looking at getting another router as a repeater, will report back. Cheers!
