Laptops Power supply questions.

well i bought my laptop (HP Pavilion DVX5200) from India and i'm currently living in Canada. the problem is the power outlets on the walls look different and also run at 110 volts whereas the ones in India use 220v. so far i've been using a step down transformer which i bought in india to act as a bridge between my power cable and the power outlet on the wall but this transformer is just to heavy and bulky to be carrying around. i find it quite difficult when i have to travel and i have no way of charging my laptop without it.

i went to a few electronics shops here to see if they had replacement power cables and adapters but they're damn expensive. recently i came across a few converters which i can just attach straight to the end of the laptop's power cable and they're a lot cheaper but of course, they don't perform the step down conversions like a transformer does and so i didn't buy them as i didn't want to risk damaging my computer. however, i noticed today that my laptop's adapter mentions an input range of 100 to 220v. does this mean that i can safely use it with just a converter and not a transformer?

i hope someone knows what im talking about :)

oh well.. just in case someone runs into the same problem as me.. i just bought a plug converter for about 20 dollars and it works without a hitch. turns out that if your laptop charger's adapter gives you an input range of 100-220v you don't need a transformer to step down the current.

I think laptop chargers have been made keeping in mind that people will be travelling with their laptops (obviously).
The DELL that I bought from the US, ive never used any converter / transformer and I'm sure that there is no issue with it.

Then too, its better to be safe than sorry.

If its mentioned 110-230V then it'll work for sure. I haven't seen one laptop power adapter that doesn't support dual voltages.

ya . my laptop' adapter also supports 100V-240V . since your laptop adapter supports 100V-220V , you can safely use adapter convertor (pin convertor). that will be all :)

My laptop adapter also works fine in 110 volt point.

I've never travelled abroad but trains also have 110V supplies for chargers and laptops.
