So, I can't shift to win7 until emu makes drivers for my 0404. Time to give linux a whirl again. :ohyeah: Which distro do I choose?

I have the asus 780g, with 3 hdds (may add more later), and a dvd-rw in a usb casing. I might add a TV tuner card too. I will install it on a dedicated hdd, so no tension of dual booting. However, everything should work when I reconnect the other 2 hdds. NTFS read/write must work out of the box.

Other things I need are:

- Download manager which works with rapidshare

- Movie playback, with mkv support. That vdpau thingy would be a bonus.

- Nice music player with flac/ape support and some library management features. Features like getting info, lyrics, album art from the net would be great.

- Would like to try out xbmc or myth.

So the battle of zhoups with linux started again :P

The good news ATI 690 works now afaik.. virus32win used and reported that its working ... Ubuntu has some serious issues with ATI fglrx proprietary driver which is needed for compositing and better hd playback :(

Better off with Mandriva 2009.1 One KDE / Gnome edition depending on the desktop you like .. . http://www.techenclave.com/open-source-and-linux/mandriva-2009-1-preview-and-screenshots-133218.html

Edit : If you want everything out of the box sacrificing some easy interface and install option Sabayon 4.1 is awesome :D XBMC installed and plethora of stuff.. All media play ootb and works great.. Since IGP don't offer better playback for HD 1080p rips XBMC scales it dwon to 720p for better results :)

+1 For Sabayon . From what ive heard it works great with Ati

Download Manager which works with Rapidshare

JDownloader

Music Player - I think Amarok does all that

Huh ! ... 780G works flawlessly .. I have 790GX so I can assure you that it will. .As stated Ubuntu/fglrx issue will irritate you ...

1. The only download manager i can think working with Firefox is downthemall.. If you choose KDE version there is awesome downloader kget but sadly there is no integration with FF yet :( KGet integration for Mozilla and Firefox KDE-Look.org

You can always open rapidshare d.l pages from Konqueror and download from kget.. Kget is not available through menus you can add it though. To run just press ALT+F2 -> kget

2. All there in MDV 2009.1 .. mkv plays ootb but since audio codec can be a bit diff considering mkv is a container format you need to install codecs.. DOn't worry there is an automated codec install codeina.. Use dragon and vlc they work awesome :D

3. Haven't used ape but flac works fine with Amarok 2.0.2 .. It has better interface and fetch artwork with easy management :) You can try songbird too .. just make sure you install gstreamer-plugin-bad before installing Songbird in KDE ONE Edition :)

4. The only led down :( XBMC is not available in official repo atm.. I requested them to add it and they don't seem motivated to do so :@ But they promised to add it from Babylon 9.04 release :) You can try MIB repos for XBMC :D

KDE or Gnome?

i would suggest gnome for ease of use.

go for ubuntu 9.04 / mandriva 2009.1 one gnome

both will serve ur purpose.

for ATi drivers.. u can either use the package manager to dload n install appropriate drivers... or dload binary from ati.amd.com n compile for respective distros.

i found mandriva 2009.1 one better in terms of trouble shooting/configuring.

it has configuration manager which most people can understand. playing wid driver configurtion is a lil complex in ubuntu as compred to mandriva.

sabayon on the other hand...will offer u ATi/nvidia drivers preinstalled.

apart from that i did not fancy sabayon.

Sabayon available in both x86/x86-64bit live dvd edition irrespective of DE.. Mandriva live offering are only 32bit ...You need to get FREE edition if you wanty 64bit in MDV :)

ehh? :ashamed:

Sabayon : 32bit and 64bit ISO's available in both Gnome and KDE , these are live DVD..

Mandriva : One Edition is the only Live CD from Mandriva which consists of proprietary s.w and all codecs .. But this Live CD comes only in 32bit format.. Doesn't have few s.w due to limited space

If you want 64bit you need to download Free edition which dont have proprietary drivers and codecs but has lots of s.w ...thx to big 4gb sized iso ..

Hey Darkstar ..Its been ages since Ive used a Linux distro ..last I used was some 7.10 Ubuntu :P which i guess is very old ..

I wish to try out some new distro once my vacations start(May end)..and my requirements are somewhat same as Zhopudey sir ,

Surfing,Multimedia (720/1080p BR-rips, Audio(mp3,FLAC support),a torrent client ,and download manager and a little of desktop bling wont hurt. :ohyeah:

What would you suggest ?

needs to be something that works out of the box or needs minimum tweaking ..cause I have no idea about configuring LINUX .
