So, my HP Deskjet AOI seems old enough to be reliable and several times it creates issues while printing. So, am looking for a printer.

Requirements :
1) Inkjet with Print copy scan
2) Ink tank system(must)

Utilization :
1) For Photo printing and i want all sizes upto A4, A5
2) Scanning and direct copying
3) Document Printing
4) The reason i need ink tank system is, i dont print everyday.I print once or twice a week max. So, my cartridge dries out.

Budget : Not more than 7-8k.

I have shortlisted one. Is it a good choice?

^ it does not have ink tank system... i suggest you to try to get ciss system fitted to your hp aio if possible. it may cost around 1.5k max and you wont have to worry of ink drying up.

Interesting as I had never heard about the CISS.

I too have an HP AIO inkjet 2050 (used for home purposes & our society official work), my usage avarages 15-25pp a week. I am fed up of changing the cartridge every 3 months or so (they are too bloody expensive) & refills do not work anymore.

Could you elaborate further on the CISS for HP
1] Where is it available ?
2] How does it fit/reside ?
- Can the fitting be done by us
2] Are these ink refills easily available ? costs ?
Any links/youtube etc

Thanks
Terry

P.S: the youtube links that I have come across are all in foreign languages (spanish, chinese etc) :(

1 - Its available on ebay india and in local ink refilling shops for lesser price. The CISS system is according to cartridge used in the printer. example many hp printers have those 1 black and 1 colour cartridge, wehereas some have individual colour cartridges.
2 - Ciss is an ink tank system. there are tubes coming out from bottom of the ink tanks and these have some small plastic regulator at their other end. you need to peel the sticker of the top of the ink cartridge to get access to the ink filling hole. drill a small space with provided drill bit in the sponge inside the cartridge and then put regulator on top of the hole. There is a stopping mechanism (which pinches the tubes tight) somewhere near the ink tank. If this is opened, ink flows to the cartridges normally. Ink tanks are always kept at a lower height than the printer and the ink cartridges inside. You need to fit the tubes coming from printer properly so that the ink cartridge can glide normally without restriction or tugging on the ink tubes. You also need to take care so that the door of cartridge compartment closes properly after fitting the tubes.
3 - Inks are available everywhere at around 400-600 for 4x 100ml ink bottles. each tank in ciss system holds 100ml ink. inks are available in both dye based and pigment based varieties and you need to make sure which type of ink your cartridge uses. Hp uses pigment inks mostly (like my aio does), but just check twice to be sure. Some say dye based ink should be used in ciss systems since they dont clog the tubes.

Before you ask, I haven't put a ciss system for my hp aio 4050. i used to just manually fill ink with a syringe in the inks till now, which as i found out is tedious and does not work everytime. plus i get my hands coloured every time with ink spots. :yuck:

even i'm thinking of getting one for my printer now. just fed up with hp's over priced cartridges which just dont last even 40 pages for a 500 rupees cartridge. cartridge has 150 pages written on it. wonder how they test them. Only thing bothering me is my ink cartridges use pigment ink whereas its recommended by almost everyone to use dye based ink in ciss. so i was unsure of taking that step since it would mean a loss of money on the whole system along with cartridges and inks too.

Thanks do much @6pack for your detailed explanation.

Checked both the ebay links

Now the tricky part is "USE THIS CISS WITH YOUR OWN CARTRIDGE"

I have been foxed by HP's AIO's launched in the last 2 years. The Model that I am using HP2050 J510a - I have never succeeded in getting it refilled (tried 3-4 places & all who assured me that it will work). Then I read some where that HP has very smartly embedded a "self-destructing" thingy onto the cartridge head - once the required pages are printed or the ink drying-up.
So no amount/method of re-filling will make the cartridge print again.

If this is true - then I do not see the CISS working (at least for the model that I have), even though the seller assures that HP2000 series printers are covered. Sorting out the dye vs pigment issue is secondary.

My old HP printer that I used for 7 years had no such problem .... In fact I changed the cartridge only once & got it re-filled umpteen times. Not anymore & you rightly said, there are times when we get just 50-70 pages (just a single page black printout works to Rs 4-5 per page). HP are the bloodiest multinational bastids on the planet. I did not opt for Epson, canon or Brother - coz of the difficulty of getting supplies. I wonder what the profit margins are for the countless retailers, stationary shops etc who stock HP's cartridges (soon the paanwala's too may stock them):dead:

Apologies to OP @harshit143 ..... as I jumped onto his thread :)

probably true. all the new ink cartridges i tried refilling did not work and i lost some ink and time. it just wont print even if you keep refilling the cartridge even before it has consumed 50% of ink capacity. had to throw away 2 such full refilled cartridges. maybe its better to just get an epson printer factory fitted with ciss system. they sell such systems but they cost around 9k i think.
