Forum Feedback "Private Conversations" instead of "Private Messages"

I've just recently joined the IndianVideoGamer forum. They use private conversations instead of PMs, which basically is kind of like a private thread. It's much easier to keep track of each other's replies this way.

It would be nice if this got implemented :). Currently sending and receving PMs on TE is very clunky in my opinion.

EDIT: Ronit's awesome suggestion:

Infact here is my idea---We can see a user online here via the green dot, then clicking it should open a chat window and start a private conversation. It will be very useful esp. for market threads. And in our profile settings there should be an option for recording/saving the chats, if in case a user cheats or for either fishy conditions. :)

Ronit's suggestion is more about chat than the thread-like structure I'm talking about. Anyway, I think we should have both of these.

Good idea!

+1 from me too :)

Even better, if there is any way to add chat option (like FB/GTalk :P) that would be great!

Great suggestion Ronit. Updated the OP :)

Suggestion on threaded PM by OP can be implemented. It will take a month or so since the admins are busy for a few weeks.

What is wrong with the current option where you click on a username and then click on 'Private Message'? It does the same thing. See screenshot.

As for saving the conversation, don't delete your PMs related to your transactions until you are satisfied with the deal.

@Renegade: Agreed, but Live chat will be more useful. You can initially start it with market section. And according to member's response, it can be implemented in other sections too or can be removed otherwise.

Eg: Many a times in market, the seller is not able to respond quickly via pm & even if he does that then the buyers inbox might be full! owing to which the message gets bounced. In such scenarios live chats serves pretty handy and portable source of communication; rather than exchanging 4-5pms it is best to sort the issue on the spot within matter of seconds saving time and efforts of both parties. :hap2:

More to suggest, you can limit the chat records in user profile be saved just for 7-15 days. After that it will get deleted automatically hence creating space for new chat records. You can even put an option for converting the current chats into a single pm/message and export it either directly to the users TE Inbox or a Folder or on the users desktop in plain text or html format. :)

I agree with Ronit. Sometimes you feel lazy and don't feel like sending PMs. :P Chat would be the easier and faster option for trading in market section.

With live chat we defeat the purpose of a forum.

:)

PM's are also detrimental, but are in place if confidential information has to be traversed.

^^ Absolutely right. If live chat is implemented then only a few comments would be seen in all threads, since members would be using live chat to solve their issues and queries. Live chat would be a little beneficial in Market thread. Else no need of live chat.

I am against Live chat but I would really like Conversations view !

Would help keep track if you are speaking with multiple people at the same time .

Although I somewhat get what you are saying, having the option for a private conversation doesn't necessarily "defeat the purpose" of an online forum. A conversation is not the same as a discussion. Since forums are platforms that encourage discussion and debate, members would still be more likely to post publicily so that they get an opinion or discussion that has more depth and scope than what they would have construed had they listened to or chatted with just one person. A conversation tool is certainly handy in conducting market deals or certain off topic discussions that threads are often prone to degenarate. It can also be useful in conducting online tournaments and events, as it is in real time. Having a "conversation" about, or openly "discussing", a topic have their own strengths and they don't have to be subservient to one another.

There are already so many free IM software clients available, why not use them? Why ask for another one?

Remember the proverb: "When it aint broken, dont fix it!"

What is being asked for is NOT an IM software, it is a means of contacting a seller in the market section directly, asap. Not everyone here is going to be adding every other member of TE onto their IM contact lists (or hope that they even use the same IM networks).
