Prob- Connecting to the net. Help Please!

Hi

I use VSNL Tata Indicom's 64kbps unlimited "Broadband".
for 6 months it was working smoothly.

Then i had to do a Windows XP Home re-install (didnt format anything, just ran the installation again).

Now, i've got 2 problems.
1) Before the re-install, i could switch on my PC and as soon as the desktop icons (including the dialling icon) appeared, i could click on it and be connected to the net in 2 seconds flat.

Now, After the re-install, i can click the dialling icon, but it takes almost 2 minutes for the dial-up window to show up on my screen.

2) After the re-install, most of the times after getting connected, i found that i am unable to browse or start any downloads!
Through a freak thought, i started Angry IP Scanner and as soon as i started scanning a range of ips (of which mine was a part), i was able to browse the net and the downloads would start miraculously!

What can i do to solve these 2 problems?
(Without formatting my pc)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Regards
Vince

Check if DMA is enabled for your hard drive via device manager/ide controller.

Also, does it happen only on after start up, or even after sometime, i mean dont connect immediately on start up, say wait for 5 min and then try dialling.

TThanks for your reply dipdude!
And this happens only if i try to dial immediately at start-up. not any time else..

EDIT: DMA is enabled..

Ok, in that case next time just watch on bootup, i think your modem is not fully intialised when you try to connect, only after your modems intialisation/connxn with isp would you be able to dial in, thats normal.

But if still want to try then d/l microsoft's bootvis utility, run it twice and see if you gain from it.

Edited after sarangs post below : Sarang nice sig ;)

1. what else do you have in your startup list? Check with msconfig.

2. did you check wat services you are running (services.msc)

3. Is there an app in your startup list that tries to use the net?

4. Do you have the latest WORKING STABLE drivers installed or are still relying on ms drivers which are good for nothing?

Thanks guys, i think i may have found my problem.. i think i installed NortonAV recently... so there is a process called ctfmon.exe (which keeps reappearing on startup)

I think this may be the problem, because as soon as windows starts up, my modem establishes the line (i.e., shows that the adsl line is ok), only the dialer takes time to appear.

I'll uninstall Norton AV and post the results tomorrow evening..
Thanks again guys..

ctfmon is related to the language options in control panel, disable it from there, goto cp/regional lang/lang/details/advanced/ check the turn off advanced text services.

i dont think this would solve your problem, norton one might do the trick :)

Eh Tata Indicom and dialing :S. I don't need to dial anything! Also avoid NAV like plague :P. Its pathetic stuff. NAV is the biggest virus around lol.
