Laptops Problem connecting laptop to hdtv

hey guys..i have dell xps studio laptop n a lg full hd tv...i connect the laptop to the tv via the hdmi port...all things work fine along with the audio only when the display of the laptop is extended on to the tv..but when i do lcd tv only and the laptop screen goes blank..then the resolution switches to 1080p..because of this what happens is the image becomes to big for the tv..and gets cut off at the edges..almost the whole taskbar gets hidden...tried the calibration settings from the nvidia control panel..but that changes my resolution from 1080..any idea on how to make the screen size fit the tv..and keeping resolution as 1080 ???
