Problem during SP3 installation over Vista

One of the weirdest issues I've encountered so far.

I was trying to install XP SP3 with a SATA-RAID fixed installation disc for a friend who was fed up with Vista (surprise surprise ! :ohyeah: ) on his notebook.

The setup started normally until I got a screen saying

Code:
"Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently, setup will load support for following mass storage devices: and below"

I got 2 choices:

*
Code:
To specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-Rom drives, pr special disk controllers for use with dindows, including those for which you have a device support disk from a mass storage device manufacturer, press S

*
Code:
If you do not have any device support disks from a mass storage device manufacturer, or do not want to specify additional mass storage devices for use with Windows, press ENTER

After hitting S to specify it says: "Setup could not find a floppy drive on your machine to load OEM drivers from a flobby disk" since the notebook does not have a floppy drive.

Continuing, after pressing Enter, The Setup hangs with a message "Examining 156328 mb disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on iastor" and I waited. And waited. Went out for an hour. Came back. It was still stuck there :@.

I tried booting into Vista later. Damnation. Vista refused to boot. I keep getting a message saying "Windows failed to startup". Select 2 options (Repair Windows and Start Windows normally). I get stuck on selecting either. Eternal damnation.

I tried booting through the Ubuntu Live CD. I tried having a look at the partition I had created for XP. I got an "Unable to mount partition" error. This was the case with all the partitions.

I'm clueless

NEW DEVELOPMENT :

After the stint with Ubuntu, for some reason the setup crossed the "Examining 156328 mb disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on iastor" barrier.. and reached the Select Partition stage. Since I had created a partition for XP, I selected it and selected

a) Do not format option

b) Format with NTFS

In both cases, the "Checking Hard disk" keeps getting stuck at around 50% while checking the disk.

I fixed the "unable to detect Hard drive" by adding the SATA drivers on a new installation disc.

The problem however, was that even though the C partition (Which had Vista) was accessible for file recovery, I could not possibly go beyond the "Scanning Disk" phase of the installation (The immediate step after formatting the partition created for XP). It's getting stuck at 50%.
