I have a Sony Vaio laptop whose motherboard went kaput and the service center guys asked a crazy price for a new one so I thought maybe I cud use some of the components. I unscrewed the HDD and i cant understand what is it exactly and how do I access it? Here are some pics, pls. help me:

Its a PATA drive.

Get a IDE to USB converter to access it on another laptop.

OR

Connect an IDE cable from your desktop to it. But you will need an adapter to do so.

it is not a PATA, I have tried what u stated but the connecter doesnt fit in the pins, the spaces b/w the pins is smaller than the space i have in my converter, it doesnt seem to fit, here is a pic:

look at the 1st pic which you posted mate. Its printed as ATA/IDE. What does this mean ?. ATA/IDE = PATA. Moreover only a PATA hdd will have pins like that. The SATA ones will have golden leads like those which come in PCI cards..

Hope its clear..

This will give you all a better idea. This is a pic directly of my laptop where the hdd goes and above it is a pata to sata converter , it can clearly be seen the size difference.
