Problem installing XP Pro..... HDD not being recognised

Nikhil

Explorer
Well, I boot up with the XP CD and then I come to the screen where it gives me 3 options.... Install, repair and quit(F3).

I hit enter to install and it says "HDD not detected". Same thing happens if I hit "r" to repair.

Whaty do I do??

I dont have a floppy drive. Do I need to reinstall the SATA drivers?? I can make a bootable CD using the SATA drivers from the Asus mobo CD.

You will need to slipstream the SATA drivers with the XP cd.. I think nlite allows this, but deejay and others should be able to tell you fully how to go about it.

If you can make a bootable cd... and access the drive, then just copy the i386 folder onto ur drive and run the setup directly from there, xp pro allows this. Although I don't know whether this'll work, try it out though

Download nlite. It allows you to slipstream service packs, drivers and perform unattended installs (when I tried the last feature, it did not work properly, but I guess that could be a one off, because the feedback on the product is generally OK).

You just have to run nlite, put in the XP cd, click on a button to select drivers you want to integrate, and it will then generate an ISO image, which you burn and install.

Are you installing more then 1 drive in RAID mode ??

if you are installing just 1 drive in normal mode (non-RAID) then you do not need any RAID Drivers for a SATA drive.

BTE, have you changed any settings in bios cmos config ??
or have you reset the cmos??

^ deejay, dont think he is installing raid.

I thought the same thing as you did at first, but maybe the promise controller on that board requires drivers to get detected by xp, the bios i think does recognize the drive but xp does not :(

Lets see what nikhil has to say, i think this a quirk of a8v board.

oh !! he is using the promise controller .....(thats the reason it is not being detected by XP)

Nikhil try using the Via Sata Interface.

Thanks guys..... dont have time today.... Will try out your suggestions and post back.

And yeah... only one HDD. A Seagate Cuda 160GB.

Even my system requires SATA drivers, because I use the Silimage controller (I have nf3 150, which does not have nvidia sata). But if you have a chipset SATA, you should definitely switch to that.

Install the promise sata controller driver - what else, are you reading all the posts or not ? if yes, then are you following them, if no, then why not ;)

I am unsure if it will work or not.. but can give a try. In BIOS under the integrated peripheral menu go to "SATA Mode" and set it to IDE. BIOS menu might not be exactly same but find it out whereever it is n give it a try. This is for VIA SATA interface.

yup, i was going to suggest what decius mentioned above.

But , I am using the asus k8v-MX m/b. it has its own quirkiness (bios bug). if i set the Sata Mode setting to "IDE" then the disk would not be recognised but if i set it to "Raid" mode it detects my lone sata drive and boots normally. :(

The A8V doesn't have an option to change the mode IIRC. You must have SATA drivers. Slipstreaming seems to be the only solution.
