Problem with Airtel

As some people may know, I shifted from Mohali to Hyd in the first week of Feb 2011. I was on the Airtel 2Mbps UL (2999/-) plan when I was in Mohali.

I applied for connection transfer to Hyd on Jan 21st after being persuaded by Airtel CC that transfer is a better choice than disconnecting in Mohali and getting new connection at Hyd. At the time I was specifically told that the connection would be deactivated and no billing would be done till I get the connection activated in Hyd. I also confirmed if I can cancel the connection from Hyd if shifting doesn't work out. Once they confirmed that shifting is possible, I was specifically told that the connection in deactivated state since the time I applied for shifting. I got a pro-rated bill of 2.8k for the Month of Jan as against the usual 3.3k that I get usually. I promptly cleared the bill online before i even got the statement.

Once I moved to Hyd (on 5th Feb), I got call from Airtel about collection of documents for the shifting process. I told them that I have to wait till I join the company in order to get a residence certificate. Once I got the same, I had to call up Airtel CC 3~4 time and let them know that I have the documents ready. An airtel rep called me up in response and told me that I would need a copy of my Company ID and PAN card is not enough for Personal identification.

I got fed up at this point and decided to apply for disconnection. When I called them up, they tried to persuade me to not got disconnect. When I persisted, the rep told me that she is noting the same in my account history against the same ticket for relocation and new ticket is not needed. After that I got several calls to try and persuade me to cancel the disconnection request or at least transfer the connection to someone else. I refused and I was told that the request will take one more week to process. I was waiting for this to complete when I got an SMS saying that my bill for Feb is 2.3k odd. I called up CC and asked why I was charged for a month when my connection was inactive and also enquired about the status of my disconnection request. He said that the account was currently active and no disconnection request was logged in my account history. He also noted from the account history that the relocation request was made in Jan and said that the bill must have been a mistake which would be rectified. He gave me a new ticket no saying both the bill issue and disconnection request have been noted in the same.

When I called up the next day to inquire about the status, I was told the ticket refers only to a disconnection request and no bill issue was mentioned, when I again explained the whole situation to him, checked my history and says that no reference to relocation request can be found, When I gave him the relocation ticket, he says it is invalid (Meaning it doesn't exist at all). This went on so on and so forth. Then on 24th Mar, I got a called form Airtel guy from Mohali saying that I have to clear my dues to get my disconnection request proceed further. I explained the entire thing to him, but he insisted that as per their records there were records of usage in Jan that were not billed and that I should clear that amount (Rs 650/-) and the reset would waived off and my disconnection request cleared. I got a colleague in Mohali pay the bill to a airtel collection agent and got a receipt for the same. The guy confirmed that my disconnection request would be cleared and I don't need to call them back and they will call me back when I should deposit the instrument.

After a few days, I get call from another rep saying that I have to clear my bill of 2.4k, if I delay, they threatened that it would be increased to 6k and I would be sent a legal notice. I called up the guy who was earlier processing my disconnection and he told me that he would handle it and that I should should hand them his phone number in case any one calls in future. So far I did not get any further calls, but I am trying to get my no dues cleared (which the guy promised would be done promptly) without any success.

Points to be noted

1. The Airtel rep either lied to me that my line was in disconnection state after the transfer request or someone has deliberately activated it again/manipulated the records.

2. The question of two pro-rated bills. I didn't get the full bill (3.3k) for either of these months (Jan and Feb). Seems to indicate that the connection was need disconnected after I applied for transfer and some manipulation was done after I applied for disconnection in order to slap some bill on me. If it was active during the entire period, I would have got full bills for both month's.

3. When I applied for disconnection in Feb, it was either deliberately not noted at all or It was removed from the account history later. Since I got several calls asking me not to disconnect or at least transfer the connection, I think its the later case.

4. When I complained about the bill, the first CC guy could clearly see that a relocation request was logged, but the very next day, the other guy could not see any thing to that effect, he says that my ticket id for the relocation which I had been quoting all this while is no longer valid, and that there is no mention of a billing issue in the ticket that the first guy logged. Did the first guy lie to me or was the ticket edited out. Also there seems to have been a manipulation of my account history as well.

5. The guy who talked to me on Mar 24th assured me that the no dues would be cleared once I pay Rs 650/-. Not only was it not cleared, but it seems it was not even updated in my account (even though I have a proper bill to prove payment). Even now he is just whiling away without clearing my no dues.

It seems to me that these companies (not just Airtel) are using tactics like these to milk customers even after they had applied for disconnection. Not just that, they seem to be manipulating their own records to give them selves the benefit of plausible deniability

The CSR's tried to feed me the same BS when i too wanted to disconnect the line.

So i used their own strength against them. I recorded each and every call over my landline using a Recorder and converted the Cassette recording into a digital sample. Visited the Airtel Chennai Nodal Officer at his office in Santhome. I politely explained everything to him and gave him an ultimatum after mailing him the recordings while reminding him that my family lawyer(who happens to be another disgruntled Airtel customer) was dying to talk to him as well.

The experience that followed was so smooth that i didn't really feel like quitting Airtel.

On my part it cost an extra months worth of Billing Charges and a Tape recorder. Most of you might think that i overdid it, but trust me, in today's world all's fair.

Reading Lord Nemesis' incident brings questions to my mind. Are the protocols set by the company too confusing (for themselves), is the IT infrastructure sit up dumb that bottle necks / errors occur, or are the officers causing this mess -- to get more dues.

1. One of my office colleagues had disconnected his Airtel cell connection. He got his no dues clearance, and suddenly out of the blue he was mailed a bill for 2K odd. Something about some billing amount left (apparently after the no due payment) and it accumulated as late payments and delinquency.

2. A friend of mine had to herself get her corporate Airtel cell connection de-activated. I myself called up CC, spoke to them -- and on the Airtel website paid the final amount. Two weeks later while at office, for the heck of it I opened the Airtel log in. There was a payment due of Rs. 202 or something. I told my friend. She called up Airtel. "Madam some usage had been done on the phone (after official de-activation) so these are pending charges". I was pi$$ed off. They were clearly lying and just not aware of what they are doing.

Again I paid that amount and this time asked them verbally about the clearance. Wanted it 0.000. They just do not let go.

^^I too am going to start this practice of recording each and every call with customer care, you never know which call might be helpful. But this android thing has no reliable call recorder. My 5 year old w800i also has a call recorder :P

I don't trust Android/iOS call-recording softwares. Majority of the call-recording softwares on android only record one end of the conversation instead of both. Not too sure about the iOS alternatives. Some of the older generation Nokia smartphones come factory-preloaded with a call recording feature.

My tape recorder is actually an old walkman with a built-in recording feature and i had to buy a line splitter seperate.

The Airtel rep either lied

airtel is itself liar of a company, even now, when I make a call, I get that notification

"21000 sms, 700/day for RC88 only", whereas I lost about 50 bucks after I recharged with it(the actual limit is just 100 sms/day and 3000 pm). How I lost 50 bucks? Well the forward was 6 parts long, and was sent to my friends all over India(rs. 1.5 per message part)..

Lesson learnt, you cant even trust airtel's ads nowadays, let alone their company...

^^ It is as per TRAI guideline. Although they have notified you in the february when it started (at least Docomo did although I had to port out of them for their crappy network). Except AIRTEL, I had connection from almost every other service providers and after reading so many bad reviews, I'm never gonna take mobile or internet connection from them. Transparency is the top priority to me and that's why even BSNL gets my vote over Airtel any day.

Yesterday evening I get a message from Airtel, you have been charged Rs 99 for downloading Cricket Java game.

I dont even have Airtel Live APN configured on my phone, and I never visisted their stupid Airtel Live portal.

The CC tells me to ensure that u shud not click on any links, BUT I DIDNT CLICK.

They promised they would revert back the charges after a discussion of 20 minutes, and I was supposed to receive a confirmation SMS for credit of Rs 99 in few hours, but its been 14 hours.

Reading this thread makes me believe, I will need to call them again and remind them else it would never work out.

At times their functional style is rustic and amusing -- and also a contrast. Let me relate an incident which occurred last weekend. AIRTEL.

1. I got a free HD DTH STB and a 3 month connection with the new Bravia I purchased. I did not need the device, so gave it to a colleague at office. I registered my friends home address at the Bravia shop and picked up the Rs 1000 charge coupon. Saturday morning I am eating lunch with my same friend and I get 6-7 rapid sms' that my STB is recharging..blah blah blah..and and engineer will come for installation at 6 : 00 PM. Within 15 minutes I get a call, then engineer is standing outside the house. I told him we are eating out timing was 6 : 00 PM how can you turn up at 1 : 30 PM. He started whining and all about Saturday, I am near by. Please come back fast. We wrapped up and went home. They installed the dish and came down to the living room. Now they only have an HDMI cable with them. My friends TV is an old LG Flatron with audio/video as auxillary. The engineer is looking for an HDMI port on the TV. I was sitting their laughing. I told him that he wil not find one, he starts to explain the quality of HDMI. And asks if I have the audio/video cable. I said that is your job. He called some officer and he tells me "ok we will get you the new cable, but you cannot keep the HDMI cable". I was OK. The installation engineer asks me "where near by can we buy a cable". I told him the shop. They left, but before going packed the coveted HDMI cable in their case. They come back after 30 minutes -- empty ended.

Me: Cable kahan hain [where is the cable]

He: Sir cable aseeee rupee kee hain [the cable is RS. 80]

Me: To kiyaa hua, le aathaa [so what you should have got it]

He: Sir company chindee hain, humarain paas itne paise waise naheen hain [the company is cheap, we do not have that much cash] And this dude is wearing an Airtel t shirt.

Me: (Open mouth) To muje call kar lethe or le athe main paise de detha [well you could have called me, I would have paid]

He: (Staring at floor) oh...

In the end I paid from my pocket (sent them again), and kept the HDMI cable. Politely requested them to take it out of their back. Again a "oh" from their face.

What does the above narration show.

1. Their system time commits something and the field officers do at own will.

2. No empathy for the customers time or privacy.

3. Technically inept staff. Basically they were good at drilling holes and mounting wall stunts.

4. Miserly behavior and zero customer eccentricity. Why they were hoarding the HDMI cable...?

5. Passing the buck and bad mouthing their own organization. How can we expect anything positive out of a company which cannot train and manage their own people.

I think all of us should bombard their stupid airtel presence id with emails regarding the same. They actually reply to the issue. That does not mean they solve it :@

I wouldn't blame them for badmouthing their own company, Airtel is really that cheap. When I was in Mohali, The second floor house beside our own was once occupied by a few freshers who had just started working with Airtel as CSR's. While they were B.Tech(CS) graduates, they were not exactly bright as far as programming/computers are concerned and they were only looking for Tech Support/Customer care roles. Airtel paid them so low at the time (4k/month) that they they had to get money from their parents to maintain the work style that Airtel requires of their employees. Ultimately they realized that it would be cheaper to be without a job and stay at home than to work for the pittance that Airtel pays them and so they resigned and went home with a job.

Indeed, even an Auto walla with a leased Auto rickshaw can make a lot more than that.
