I just installed farcry, but it does not work properly.

When I play the game, after a few minutes, everything just goes black (screen goes absolutely blank). You can hear the sound behind, but no video. It recovers, but after a few minutes will hang permanently (behind, you can hear the music, and if I press ESC, the menu music appears, so the game is responding, but still black). Sometimes the gameplay appears to continue, sometimes it does not. The only way out is ctrl+alt+delete.

I have tried varying the settings from both the game menu and catalyst control panel, updating to catalyst 5.13 etc, but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions on what to do?

I ahve a 9600pro

Farcry does have some refresh rate problems with the monitor......try to let the game manage the refresh rate of the disp instead of enforcing it through windows.

Download links for the 1.33 patch

http://www.3dgamers.com/games/farcry/downloads/

http://patches.ubi.com/far_cry/far_cry_v1.33.exe

http://files.filefront.com/Far_Cry_v133_Retail_Patch/;4025031;;/fileinfo.html

Oh yeah... the file is 21MB. But first you need the earlier upgrades :P

See which patch you have applied and then download the latest http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=691

To upgrade to 1.3 ---- http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/DownloadFile.aspx?dfId=907 This is 75MB.

And after this, upgrade to 1.31 --- http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/DownloadFile.aspx?dfId=1071 This is 8.9MB

And then directly 1.33 ---- Links given earlier. 21MB.

Hope patching the game helps. Without the 1.3 patch, I had problems playing the game too.... The grass was black. Not all parts but patches of grass werent green. But after applying the patches, the game worked flawlessly :D

According to the website ---
* Fixed a rendering issue with Radeon 9600 graphics cards
This is for Patch 1.2. But dont bother applying 1.2 Go to 1.3 directly.

How is that done, by using vsync? I don't see any option for refresh rates.

first clean out any trace of older / other graphic drivers that you may have installed on ur m/c by using "Driver Cleaner" program.

Then Reinstall directx. (not really required but just to be sure that all required files are intact)

Then reinstall the latest catalyst

apply the farcry patches as mentioned above by Nikhil
and post back ur observations .....

Well, I just reinstalled (clean format+ install) windows XP on the 22nd of December - and I only installed two sets of drivers - one was Cat 5.9, and then when farcry didn't work, I uninstalled them using the cleaner (cat-uninstaller from ATI), and then installed 5.13 - the very latest. So that part is covered. DirectX should be fine as I just installed Windows XP SP2.

I will try the patches - they are currently downloading.

PS - is there any way to check which patches/versions are currently installed?

ok, I installed the patches. It appeared to be going fine for a while, but then blacked out. So what did I do? I pressed shift five times in a row. That transferred me back to windows (sticky keys dialog box appeared). Then I went back into farcry. And it worked! The display was back! I did this a couple of more times too!

This is crazy! I mean, this is manageable only when I am not under fire, I need something more permanent I guess.

Is ur graphic card o/c'ed ??
Have you ruled out gpu or graphic memory overheating issues. ??
Give ur psu details...

kingkrool, try disabling the sound from inside farcry & try, does it still hang ?

or try to reduce the hardware sound accleration using dxdiag/sound. see if that helps.

or else try this

More than likely, the problem is your AGP and FastWrites settings. For the ATI card, go in to SmartGart, and set AGP to 4x, and turn FW OFF. You may need to do this acouple times and reboot, because sometimes the driver will redetect AGP to 8x. Onceyou have those settings fixed, Far Cry will stop freezing on that machine. For the 6800, that is a different breed of cat, but the same exact problem. Makesure you are patched 1.3, and then download RIVATUNER ( google it ). Installand run Rivatuner, and look for the AGP settings. Note there are 4 icons to theright of that setting. Choose the icon for System settings. Then you can set AGPto 4x, and FW OFF .. AND, NOTE: YOU MUST APPLY THE SETTINGS. Also make sure youcheck the box to put a file in StartUp that tells WinXP to maintain those settings. After that, Far Cry will stop freezing, but it will still show screen lags to adegree. Look in your system BIOS - CMOS settings for AGP aperture or chache, orsomething like that. It will probably be set to 32 Meg ram. Up it to 128 Meg, and the screen pauses will clean up a bit, or possibly a lot. You can get betterperformance on the 6800 by turning AA OFF in the game, and upping the screensize to 1024x768, or higher to get smoother edges. AA is very demanding, andthe nVidia 6800 is not very fast, so higher screen rez compensates without somuch performance hit.

Use an earlier version of the Catalyst drivers. The newer ones are quite buggy....5.13...5.12....and 5.11..

Go back to 5.7 or so. With all the tweaking that ATI has done to get its latest and greatest running super they have screwed up what used to work on the earlier cards. I run into issues with the water rendering on my X850 and had to go to an earlier version.

The guys are coming out with updates so fast that they have not even ironed out most of the bugs in the prior versions.

Try this: Go to the ATi control panel, disable AGP writes and reboot. This fixed a lot of issues in some games.

See if you can disable it from the BIOS as well. And also make sure that the AGP aperture is set to either 32MB or 64MB in the BIOS.
