CPU/Mobo Problem with new gigabyte 970chipset mobo

Turned out to be the ram sticks.

Faulty memory is my bet

I'm having a Sheldon Cooper moment just about now.

Any change that you have to make manually will be wiped out when you have to do a BIOS reset. Just exchange your sticks for a pair that works correctly even at default settings (1.5v) and if required clock up from there.

I have run 880G boards that will easily get a 1333 stick to 1600 speeds with no voltage increase. Sticks used were G.Skill value RAM - the generic green PCBs.

Lol. Sheldon. You were right.
I just asked the seller if he'll allow me to return the memory. If not then I'll have to get 2nd hand stick from market.

Seems like I need to bump up ram voltage to 1.65v in order to get rams to work. Right now they're working @1.476 or something.
This guy has mentioned the same problem I'm facing.

forum.crucial.com/t5/Standard-DRAM-Memory/RAM-incompatible-Impossible/td-p/128172

reminds me the issue I've faced a long time back on a athlon x2 + ddr2 ram setup .. the pc will abruptly shutdown during playing games .. after lots of hair pulling finally had to set DDr2 ram voltage to 1.9v.

I think the mobo BIOS is designed badly. I have a hunch, it won't boot with 1600 ram having tight timings. These crucial sticks have timings of 9-9-9-24 and hence the mobo does not boot. If I put that friends IBall 1333 ram with 9-9-9-27 timings it boots up.
With both iball & crucial installed, the crucial timings become 8-8-8-25 with some additional timings & speed auto adjusted by the board. Both rams run at 1334 MHz or something then.

And changing voltage to 1.65v didn't help at all. It couldn't see the ram.

Do I need a 3rd party CPU cooler with this?
I saw that temps hit 40 degree c on idle @3.5ghz & around 45-50 degree @ 4.1ghz.
This is with all 8 cores running. With just 4 of them running and hyper boost or whatever disabled, it went down to ~33 degree c. Ambient temp is 25 degree c.

Is the bolded part with reference to full load?
Either ways, indicated temps are fine and do not warrant a third-party cooling solution.
Why don't you wait out a few days (months) more and then decide if you need one as per your usage pattern.

No not on full load. Its temps on idle with all 8 cores running at that speed. It keeps shifting from 41-45-50 deg and vice versa in few seconds. Probably because of fan settings in bios.
Haven't tested it out on full load till now. Haven't even installed operating system.

BIOS will always show one core loaded temp. It is unable to use any power saving technologies, so you can expect lower temperatures once you have the OS installed and power saving is working correctly.

Your temperatures are in line with the stock cooler use case. I wouldn't overclock with stock cooling solutions, but that's just me. You can expect load/gaming temps in mid-60s at stock clocks, which is perfectly reasonable. Unless all you do is run Prime95 or OCCT benchmark runs, you will not need to be worried about temperatures.

After waiting one week for replacement of rams got to hear something funny from vendor. He says board supports only 4 or 8Gb x 4 sticks or 2Gb x4 sticks and does not support the 4Gb x 2 I bought. Basically he wanted me to buy two more 4Gb sticks which I refused.

So we decided he return me the money I spent on the memory. (Seems like memory prices have increased by a bit since I bought from him).

Could someone link me to a 4 or 8Gb memory that will work on this mobo? Any good deal in TE market is also welcome.

Vendor is an idiot.

Try generic value RAM at 1333 or 1066MHz. Since you are not using an IGP, impact on benchmarks is small and in day to day use not noticeable.

I got the ram @cranky mentioned and the board boots up just fine. The ram runs at 1333Mhz instead of 1600Mhz even though the ram advertises 1600 MHz everywhere from the package to the sticker on the module.

Leaving this aside a new problem came up. I can't see my sata DVD rom in boot option to install windows. In bios defaults, the sata option is on ide, even changing it to ahci mode or pata mode for dvdrom port didn't help. The bios shows 0.0Gb (if i put windows 7 disc in drive), next to the sata port where DVD rom is installed.
Boot option does not show windows 7 disc. It just errors out and tells me to reboot with a bootable drive in place.

In my old machine the DVD drive worked perfectly. These uefi bios are a pain in the neck imo.

I have old Seagate disc with windows installed on it. Will that work with totally different hardware now?

^^
Chances of the system booting up with that Seagate disc are next to nil.

And doesn't the BIOS show physical size for only actual hard drives/SSDs. Am not sure it shows the size for optical drives.
Have you tried a different SATA port for your DVD ROM?

If that doesn't work, just fire up your new machine with a bootable USB drive. It's about time you enjoyed your new PC.

I changed the port from 5 to 3 and also put in the old os hdd. It then showed option to boot from DVD which I selected. Windows DVD shows repair option for old installation but I opted to install new on another drive.

Maybe changing the port helped I guess.

Finished installation of most of the stuff I wanted. I see that cpuz shows weird temps of 17deg c for all cores. Ambient temp of room is almost 29 degree c.

Edit: its core temp that's showing weird reading.

Wanted to say CPUz shows ram running at 800Mhz.

I got the crucial rams yesterday. These seem to be a new batch and work perfectly in my system.

Now the 4gb corsair ram I bought from flpkart can't be used together with these since timings are different of both brands.
The crucial sticks have 9-9-9-24.
The corsair one has a 11-11-11-30.
With all three in comp, the crucial sticks run at 9-9-9-30. All run at 1600Mhz.

System boots normally but Windows just restarts in between all of a sudden if there is tiny amount of load on CPU like playing a movie.

If I use only corsair ram (or crucial 8 gb), no problems at all. Can run media player for hours easily.
Seems like I'll have to sell off one brand of sticks.

To top this my retail licenced version of windows won't activate now. Gives some error 0x c004c008.
Year got off to a bad start for me. :(
