Problem with NTSC games on PS2

I have a PS2, and most of the NTSC (60hz) games I play, look really bad. The colours are too bad, and the graphics are very jaggy (if you know what I mean). The PAL games (50hz) look great. Colours are nice, and the screen is very smooth and sharp. But I am struggling with NTSC games. I have a KVXF21M80 Trinitron, and I am using the AV Cable that came with the PS2. I cannot change my TV? Any suggestions on how I can improve my picture quality?

KVXF21M80?? thats one helluva old tv!

the problem could be that it doesn't feature an onboard NTSC to PAL converter

or it could be that PAL mode is forced and so to switch go into the service mode by first switching to standby mode and then press in order "display" followed by "5" followed by "vol+" followed by "power" within a second of each. in this mode screen through the available options and there should be a setting for changing the frequency like in your case from 50hz to 60hz.

this should do the trick or else get yourself an ntsc to pal converter

or maybe even better.....a NEW TV!!!:ohyeah:

Not really! I already spend all my cash on other things. I tried your method, but I don't know how to change the 50 to 60 in service mode. Can you give a link on the NTSC to PAL converter I should be looking for?

if your'e running the games in AV mode for your tv then also give this a shot - try changing the display mode from AUTO to PAL or from NTSC to PAL.

but if even this doesn't work then ask the guy from who'm you buy the PS2 games to sell you a converter and believe me, he can help. dunno how much it will cost though.

Thanks. You had the same problem as me?

@sid_donnydarko, I have tried that option. My TV can display NTSC images fine, but the problem is the NTSC games looks really jagged on my TV. I play PES6 on PAL mode, and it looks smooth, but if I switch to 60hz using the option in the the game, the game becomes really jagged, and colors look awful.

Will this converter actually solve my problem? I tried to convert a PS2 ISO from NTSC to PAL using a software (NTSC2PAL Y Fix). When I tried the game, the game looked great, just like my PAL games. However, there was a black line on the top and bottom, and the gameplay became very slow. So, can this converter solve my problem?

yup it should. ntsc2paly convertion s/w is used in case you don't have a converter. but there is a problem with the s/w. or rather a bug that can't be fixed. well the y offset value has to be set manually depending on the picture tube and manufacturer and this varies not from one manufacturer to another but also from one model to another. the s/w cannot determine an offset value for your tv and so if a random value is set then the game picture won't be guarenteed centre'd after the conversion. and that's why you may end up looking at a picture that has a black borders or it won't be stretched correctly.

the converter bridges the gap between the ps2 and the tv and automatically scales the image at the same time. although your tv supports pal natively it may not support ntsc 3.58/4.43 streaming properly.

think of the converter as the h/w to your s/w.:D

cheers:)

Thanks for the awesome reply!! So I am guessing the converter should solve all my problems. Sweet!!

There's nothing in ebay, so I'll have to look around in Palika. Any advise which shop I can get it?

Hey,

I bought the converter today (My PS2 wasn't working). How do I connect the converter with the PS2? Ive connected the AV cables with the converter, and the converter with the PS2, but how to I connect the converter to the TV?

Sorry to go OT but I think my question would somewhat be in conjunction to this one.I was planning to get a PS2 & play it on my TV in my bedroom which is a BPL 14 inch. The problem is this darn model only supports a PAL signal input so any NTSC PS2 games that I play would instantly turn black & white.:(

Is there any converter available in normal market for converting NTSC signal's to PAL? I would not prefer online purchase so could anyone suggest any such gadget which could pull this off & if possible it's price too?

Sorry to hitman again for highjacking your topic.:)
