guys i have a 512kbps lan connection but the problem is from past month i am getting very low download speed as low as 3kbps or 15-20 kbps instead of 60- 64kbps normal.i was exhausted complaining the service provider atlast he send a person to check.after checking he says the system is affected with virus and from their part there is no problem.i checked with norton antivirus 2011 and spyware doctor for possible threats.but found none.but still the speed is slow.

They say they cannot see my mac address.
kindly can anyone please tell me what is the problem here.

It is a standard reply of Viruses.

Try doing a speed test and see what you reach max on an average of 2-4 tests.

Also if there is any ADSL modem attached, check the downlink and uplink in its settings.

Btw who is your service provider (since you mentioned you have LAN connection)

if i were you,
i would do the following
1)open the browser and access the router configuration utility via its address(its 192.168.1.1 for BSNL)
2)if you don't know the router address mentioned above ask the regional manager or JTO via phone
3)Go to the DSL settings tab and check the parameters on display such as SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) and Attenuation rate
4)take a screenshot of the same and post it here, so that we can be of further help
5)call up the JTO again and discuss the problem, the customer care people are well........ i would rather not say anything about their knowledgeableness;)

p.s.
in my case whenever i get bad speeds its invariably due to improperly covered joints in the telephone wire. i just call up some folks at the local BSNL center to check and rejoin the wires properly and all goes well for 6 months or so:P
