Here's a little background to my problem;
About 6 months ago I bought a HP Pavilion 9600 CTO Notebook with 3GB of RAM , 2 HDDs of 150 GB and a Geforce 8600 GS Graphics card.

It had come pre-installed with Vista. I decided to restore my laptop a few days later and the recovery partition didn't work at all. Therefore , I decided to keep things simple and installed XP instead. Now , it worked well for a while , but I decided to change my version of XP. My computer had also been infected by the Sujin, Rontokbro some rootkit viruses and the newfolder.exe trojans. I had decided to format the entire hard disk and install a fresh copy of XP after removing these viruses. Also , one of my hard disks is ruined. Infact , whenever I boot the computer , it shows a system message telling me to replace my hard disk.

Now the apparent problem with the GRAPHICS CARD is quite complicated. Whenever I used to switch on a game like Counter Strike , It used to work for one session. Whenever I restarted the game in the same session , my laptop would freeze. On cutting power supply and restarting , my screen USED TO TURN UP BLANK !! I could boot into windows, but my screen wouldnt have any display on it! It would , however reappear on system restart. !! Occasionally , I've got a blue screen error with something to do woth my graphics driver ( nv*****.dll )

I've tried everything I could... from installing different versions of the drivers, adjusting the settings, etc...

Is it something to do with hardware or software ?? I'm so confused.

Instead of trying to so many things, when your one of the HDs has failed and you have trouble with the display, first up, head to the HP service center. Get the HD replaces, and also ask them to check and replace the GFX card.

Next up, to enjoy your 3GB ram better, and also the cutting edge hardware you have, i would suggest a move to Vista would be better. 6 Months is a long time, and i believe 6 months ago, you did not have the SP1 build of Vista? Give it a shot again.

And the BSOD errors you getting, you GFX drivers are faulty or cause of the problem. Update to the latest edition of the GFX drivers from Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies

I have another problem. Obviously that was the first thing that came to my mind - to head straight to the HP Service Center , but believe it or not I've tried to talk to the guys so many times it's not even funny. And HP has only one answers to all my troubles - "This laptop was purchased in the United States , It does not have warranty in India !! " I wanted a set of recovery discs for which I OBVIOUSLY DO NOT WANT to pay 2300 Rupees !!

I wanted to try and do it myself and be content with the fact that I'm not gonna buy a HP product ever again (Yes , I've had other horrendous experiences with HP )

Anyway, the problem seems to have worsened. I'm thinking of giving the laptop to one of those shady service centers in Nehru Place (in Delhi) but I'm extremely apprehensive about them since they seem to keep the laptop for a day or so.

errr...no offernse but not really HPs fault. If you dont have some kind of international warranty, they will NOT support your prouct You can alwys demand paid service, but the problem is that that particular model was prob never released in India so no parts available anyway :P

As to the harddisk, scan once using HDTune, if it shows errors, get it replaced. Pretty easy t replace that.

Also, if the lappy is under US warranty, c if you can find someone to send it across for repair.

HP does suck in service. :P

I had my HP pavillion PC and it had some directX problem and those guys were dumb about it. I used to call them but no proper response. Finally, i sent them a consumer court notice and then they came and replaced the entire PC even if the warranty was over. :ohyeah:

Regarding ur lappy, the warranty or the service won't be acknowledged by HP India since the product was not purchased in India. However, u can change ur HDD just be going to a local notebook store and buying a new HDD and asking him to fit it off. That's it with ur HDD.

Secondly, since ur HDD is infected, reinstall the entire OS, download drivers from HP US website, install them and u should be fine. Try it out once. The graphics drivers might be the biggest problem. And do remeber, whenever u install a driver, before installing new set of drivers, do a clean uninstall using Driver Cleaner etc. Drivers messing around create a lot of blank screens.

Third, is ur lappy heating up too much. R u using for long span of time? If yes, use a chillpad or just jeep it at a height while using it. Freezes and game restarts could be due to heating up of the components.

If all fails, wait for the next time u go to the US or someone else goes. :)
