Problem with Zte Blade/Orange San Francisco

I was using an orange san francisco flashed with android 2.2 japanese jellyfish with an Idea SIM. I removed the SIM card and formatted the phone memory/did a factory reset and gave the phone to a friend. He is unable to use the phone and says the SIM card is not detected anymore.
What is the problem and how can it be resolved?

What exactly is happening ?
Getting emergency calls only and a cross over the network ??

Try the following....

Under settings, wireless and networks, mobile network, tell him to select Use 2g only and do a manual selection of the idea network and it should work.

Also try another SIM too.
