Problems with Netgear WGR614 + Windows Live Messenger

I've been using Live Messenger a bit recently, and i've noticed for some weird reason the net just disconnects and sometimes it just isnt able to reconnect unless i reboot the router. I'm quite sure its messenger, since it happens within a span of 15 mins or so of launching it but is fine if messenger is closed.

Anyone with the same combo having any issues or tips? Did a bit of googling and apparently its related to uPNP or something i.e. the router sucks :no:
 
It's not messenger, that router model has problems with overheating and the likes. I have the same one (v6), although mine atleast works for 2-3 days before a reboot usually.. have you put those stands you get with the router to make it upright? Will help with the overheating issue.
 
^ Yeah i have it standing upright already, mostly cause it saves on desk space :lol:. Dont think its an overheating issue though.

Will try entering the DNS servers manually, but how would that help?

BTW presently i've set up the router with my login information and not the modem (modem is set in bridge mode i think). Should i perhaps config the modem with the login info instead?
 
Nah that won't help. Is your router v6 or v7? Updated firmware? Lots of people have issues with this router which gets solved by rebooting, and the worst part is to reboot it you have to remove the power plug and put it back coz theres no option in the web admin page :@

Does only MSN stop working, or browsing etc also?
 
I used that router for over a year and had no issues, now with a buddy who also doesn't have issues. I got mine from the US in 2005, so maybe the ones available locally suck? ;) Couldn't it be some settings conflict between the router and Live Mess?
 
Well i have same router and its working great for a year now.

I did update the firmware to the latest one which was released quiet a while ago. AFAIK there has not been many new FW updates for this lately.
 
Mine overall works fine but I reboot it every 2-3 days atleast.. sometimes out of compulsion and sometimes just in case..

Anyway mine is v5 of the WGR614. I too updated the firmware to the latest 1.0.9 IIRC (the day i bought it), they havent released anything else after that. Rather they've just gone on to release newer versions of the router itself! - v6, v7 .. etc :(

Not sure when this problem cropped up since i very very rarely use MSN messenger. I guess its some sort of a conflict, so trying to figure out what the issue could be. BTW do you guys config the modem with your login info, or the router ?
 
Shot in the dark....

does live messenger open too many concurrent connections?

Netgear/Belkin routers have problems with apps that swamp the TCP/IP connections e.g. torrnt clients

I've got the tata ADSL connection that doesn't require login info. I've setup the static IP, dns etc on the router and the modem is in bridged mode.
