Mastermind
I want to close my axis bank account. I searched for account closing form on their site but it was not there. The bank is debiting 250 rupees every month after it changed my zero balance account to normal account. I tried adding funds to my account by NEFT but it got declined and came back. Seems the bank froze my account.
Last I saw they debited 750/- already and probably by the 12th of this month another 250/-. Highway robbers!!!
Besides cheque book, and atm card, pan card and address proof anything else I need to take? Like banker verification or blank cheque so they transfer remaining funds after stealing from my account.

I faced the same issue. My account was frozen and was kind of inactive. I had to resubmit the documents, get the verification done to get the account active again and then go to the bank personally to close it.
In my case Sharekhan was stupid enought to print the account no also on the cheque so I had to get the account reactivated to deposit the cheque. After activating the account they deducted 250INR twice from my account (+30INR tax each time).
You dont need to take anything there... apart from your account no.
They had asked me to get the cheque book and debit card I told that the cheque book was finished and debit card lost.
The account got closed in 2 days and after a month got a cheque of the interest on the amount in my account.
I had withdrawn the entire amount before closing the account. If you plan to withdraw in cash you will need atleast 1 cheque.

Fire them left right and center on my behalf also.... bloody chors....
Mine was a min bal Rs5000 account. I had about 8k in that account and dividends kept depositing in it. Now they bumped up the min bal to 10k without informing customers. I lashed out at their CC and released all my frustrations on the branch manager here....
You need to go the same branch where your account is to get it activated (if its frozen)
for closing the account you can visit any account.

The NRV are getting quite irritating. They deduct without telling. HDFC did that to me some years back. Also take a written application for closure.

So I have to get it activated first? Do I need to add money too to maintain minimum balance of 10k?
Saw a customer application form which says it will take between 2-14 business days. Till then they will merrily help themselves to cash in my account like its their fathers money.

Go ask them, if you can close it. Why go through the hassle to activate it.

First login in to the Axis Bank account online and check the status of the account. If its Active you just need to walk into any branch and shove the account *(*(&^*(&^*(()$%&^$*%%^#&
If the status says "Frozen" then you need to first activate it and then close it. But since they have already deducted amount from your account means its Active.
So just close it ASAP.
In my case it was frozen for 2 quarters in which they did not deduct any amount but I could not use the account. It was all when Sharekhan transferred money to my account online the funds always bounced back to my sharekhan account. Then I enquired at a branch (CC is pathetic. Hindi speaking idiots who dont know anything about banking) that I came to know of all this bullshit of activating the account even if I only want to close it directly :(

Faced the same issue some years back. I went to the nearest branch (any will do), paid them Rs. 750 (only cash is acceptable) and closed the a/c for good. Online it's not possible.

Sent them a mail through online banking yesterday.
Got this response.
Dear Mr. Zzz,

We refer to your appended email regarding account closure.

Please contact the nearest Indian Retail Axis Bank branch and submit the attached account closure form along with your cheque book and debit card in order to close your account.

Thank you for being a valued customer.
Will take print out of the form, fill it and give to my nearest branch by this weekend.

If you account status is "Active" then the best solution is to go your branch meet the customer support people and request for their assistance to close the account. At the most you may need to fill a form or write a letter to the bank manager requesting him a closure of account.

This is a standard procedure being followed in most of the banks. Also remember that what ever documentation procedure you do please take a copy of the same and get it attested from the bank authorities. This will ensure their quick action.

Regarding ICICI:

Someone I know, has around 20000 in the bank. Account is active. Does not have Debit card or cheque book. Wants to close. Upon submitting request / form: will ICICI return the money via a cheque, or something else happens...? Needs to be done ASAP. Also to close ICICI account, is there an account closure form, or a written application will suffice...?

^For ICICI, 3 years back i just gave written application in their branch. Before giving the application, i transferred all the money to another account via netbanking.

As I mentioned the cheque book and DC are not available. And without the DC (grid on the back) inter bank money transfer cannot happen.

@asingh During account closure, he/she can submit this form: http://www.icicibank.com/managed-assets/docs/form-center/Req_refund_closure.pdf
Refund is via DD, I guess.

Thanks...!

I saw that document. Why have they complicated things. They need an address proof to close the account. It would be nice, if they could then and there, issue a DD or cheque and close things out. Disengaging from an entity in India is the biggest PITA. I am so fed up. Will talk to ICICI tomorrow.
