As blue-laser pick-up heads (PUHs) for use in the PlayStation 3 (PS3) are expected to increase in supply and decrease in price, the production cost of the game console could be reduced by as much as US$100, according to Taiwan-based makers of game consoles and components.

Sony Shiroishi Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony, on April 23 announced an expansion of its monthly production capacity of blue-violet laser diodes, a key component of HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc (BD) PUHs, to 1.7 million diodes as well as the beginning of volume production of 240mW (milliwatts) blue-violet laser diodes in November of 2007. This will greatly increase the supply of blue-laser PUHs at lower prices, the sources indicated, noting the reduction of costs could reach US$100.

Well... It will be for Sony's good only... The sooner Cost of production goes down the more discount they will be able to offer on the console which by the way cost a bomb...

Still doesn't seem enough for Sony to start making profits any time soon and people will now demand a price cut.

I don't think this will help Sony lower the prices by a hundred dollars, but it will help them lower it somewhat and increase supply.

I know PS3 supply isn't a problem as of now, but if prices are lowered, it might well become an issue.

A PS3 at 100 dollars less than its current selling price wouldn't be too bad for people who are willing to spend on consoles.

I believe they would want to first have the development costs catch up to it's price point before they even consider dropping the price. Then again, Sony loves losing money so you never know.

100$= Rs 4200/- odd...

Current retail price of PS3 in India..40k

40-4.2=35.8

Lol 35.8k is still a hell of a lot to pay for a console in India. So I assume this price wont have much or any effect on Indian consumers.

dont even consider 100$ cut for India...cos the price is not equivalent to US$....so dont expect a price drop even before next year around 3rd quarter...once their long awaited titles come out people will buy their consoles watever the price wud be....obviously not exceeding current price....

One thing I've learnt is that Indian prices never follow foreign ones. So, no matter what its price abroad or how it changes, it will hardly make a difference here.

And XXX is right.
