Hello Folks,

My PS3 (40 GB PAL) has stopped reading discs. By discs, I mean my game discs, I havent tried anything else and dont intend to either. My PS3 is under warranty (purchased, 5th Feb 2008) and I put up at Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Can fellow PS3 owners tell me where is the service center and what is the procedure.

On the earlier threads I have read that its a painful procedure and mostly they give you a brand new replacement.

Any tips on how should I go about it ?

Lord Nemesis, I guess you have gone through a similar ordeal...........can u throw some light ?

Please Note: There used to be a 'cut cut' noise from the ps3 when the game used to be loading after I had just inserted it, beyond that I dont know as the game music was loud enough to mask it. Is it normal?

You need to take the PS3 to your nearest Sony service center. They will take your PS3 and give you a service request receipt. Most service centers in India cannot handle PS3 repairs except for the most minor ones. But they will still keep the PS3 for a few days (probably so as not to loose face) and then inform you that your PS3 needs to be replaced.

After this point it all depends on your luck and the service center. Some people have got replacements in a day or two while others like me have had to wait 2~3 months. If your PS3 is the 40GB model, then hopefully you will get the replacement quickly, but if its a 60GB Model, you will have to go through a longer process. Since 60GB Models are not in production now, they will replace your PS3 with a 40GB Model and give back the price difference in the form of a cheque. In my case, the replacement took a little over 2 months and one more month to get the cheque.

first call up the toll free no (it will be written on ur warranty card). they will direct u to the nearest service centre. u will get a brand new replacement, however the replacement may take 20-30 days dependong on ur luck.

Service Centres : Access Service Information : Support : Sony India

cool.........thanks..............20-30 days !!!...........thatz criminal man !.......and is the warranty extended taking care of the 20-30 day period ?

edit1: Nemesis thatz very bad customer care !.......i guess the unavailability of the console was the reason...........though its not reason enough !!.............

anyway lets see how things span out for me............thanks for the help.......

What about the noise.........have u experienced it before failure ?

Go to the main service centre in your city and get the service request receipt , it makes a difference as the defective parts are sent to their head office/stock holding area and the RMA is generated from there. In my case (delhi) , it took them about 5 days after which i got a sealed box packed 40gb console and a coupon for a free game for the inconvenience caused. Also keep calling them every 2-3 days to check on the progress , it speeds things up.

Isn't the 60 gig model one with PS2 chip onboard? Darn....too bad if one has to part with that piece.

Nope, though 60GB PS3 PAL has PS2 backward compatibility, its done through software emulation. It does not have the Emotion Engine chip like the NTSC models have. The PS2 compatibility is useless anyway as games look worse than on a PS2. I would gladly part with a 60GB PS3 for a 40GB one. There were improvements at the hardware level like a 65nm Cell Engine that makes it worth while.

Then I think my friend has a NTSC model. He got it from US. But PS2 games look brilliant on it.

^^ I think Software Emu looks like crap(?), the NTSC one that i own aswell, no problems with it, looks the way its supposed to look(meaning just as awell as PS2).

As for the one in a million users facing this issue, i think the numbers are more than one in a million. Im not going to speculate the number, im just gonna keep my finger's crossed and hope that mine isnt that "one in a million".
