This is awesome!

Even though I'm playing it on a very beautiful 26inch Samsung LCD in my room, and I've learned the fact that Next-Gen gaming is only 50% complete without an LCD TV, 720P DVD's upscale is all that I needed to complete the full entertainment package in my room ^_^ I'm already playing PS3 on 1080i over HDMI (Since Divx and regualr cable look horrendous on the TV, DVD's and gaming is all I'll be using the screen for)

lol. Its a PS2 game first, remember that!

Hardly any game out on PS3 now is 1080p native, but in some news about GOW3 on Ps3 they said it'll be 1080p native.

^Ah, you're right. It's 720p. Only RR7 and Virtua Fighter 5 are 1080p native on the PS3.

How's the upscaling working out for you? Noticeable difference on DVDs?

The update hasn't released yet (May 24th in US), I'll post screenshots of the upscale on DVD's as soon as I get it.

Here's the official press release :

PlayStation.com

Another neat little feature with the firmware :

Photo Printing, Viewing, and Editing The photo capabilities of PS3 system have been enhanced, allowing users to print digital photos stored on a PS3s hard drive or inserted storage media. Currently, select Epson printers connected via USB are compatible. In addition, users will find a new type of slideshow for displaying photos, zoom functionality and the option to crop images.

They need to add support for Canon printers and I'm fit. Having images being printed out would not only make it an ideal package to use with word processors and firefox on Linux on PS3, but also with my Sony Cybershot camera :P

Eidt :

The updates released but its a large ass 110mb download, I should get have it installed by tomorrow morning.

Upscaling really works for games. You can see a noticeable improvement. However video streaming is still a pain in the a**.

Got the update. It'll upscale everything now.

Though, my DVD-R ripped copies of movies didn't look that pretty still (most probably because I compressed them to 4gb when they originally were around 7-9gb in their dual layered original DVD)

Played X-Men 2, which I have original, looked good (MUCH better than without upscale), but when sitting real close, you can still see some color distortion and grains, maybe its the LCD thing and the reason Bluray/HD DVD were made...
