Hey PS3 folks, have a question for a friend of mine.

He has bought a PS3 (120 GB) from the US and is planning to bring it to India.
The box mentions that is it an NTSC console. However all the games he has bought from there are BlueRay.

Are all the PS3 games available in only BlueRay? If so does that mean the game discs we buy in India will also play on his console? Or are they encoded as PAL?

My understanding (which may be incorrect) is that the discs are either NTSC/ PAL / BlueRay so if they are BlueRay then it should work on any console (India or US). Is this correct or am totally off? :)

TIA

All PS3 Disc based games are on Bluray format.

PS3 has no region encoding for games. So games bought anywhere will play on it.

but movies he has to buy only with region -a code

PS3 games work on any PS3 in this world. Movies on the other hand, do not.
As a note, the functionality, to region code the games exists, but is not enforced currently. All games made for the PS3 are on Blu-rays.

The console is either NTSC or PAL, however that is again keeping the movie aspect in mind (the last point I am not 100% sure of, but I think I am right in assuming this).

since we are on the topic can one unlock the ps3 like we do on DVD players to make it multi region ?

PAL/NTSC are region coding given out to media's of different region. Blu-Ray is a media standard or format, like HD-DVD (which is dead now). PS3 is designated to use it's games on Blu-Ray media, while the 360 uses it's on Dual Layer DVD's. So that's how it works. Like others said, the games for PS3 are region free. However, the DLC (Downloadable content) isn't. So yes, your friend can play games purchased from India as well as any other country.

Great thanks for the info.

So then the games on the BlueRay disc are not NTSC / PAL specific encoded?

just a heads up bro..games which are encoded in the NTSC format will not play on your TV if it doesn't support NTSC. This is generally the case with older TVs (CRT). If you have an LCD TV then don't worry, you wont face any problems playing NTSC or PAL games.

Also, if you are planning to game on a PC monitor, ensure that it supports HDCP or else you will only see a black screen.

more than 50% of blu rays released worldwide are region-free. Just check a few sites like blurayregionfree and see if it is region-free.

I personally have bought Blu rays from Amazon and they work well with my INdian PS3
