PS3 HDD Upgrade

Has anyone done this? I am fed up with removing one game every time I want to install another. I would like to upgrade to a 320 or 500GB HDD. I have encountered mixed opinions about PS3 HDD Upgrade.

Some say that only 2.5" 5400RPM SATA Drives have the best compatibility while others claimed to have hooked up a 1TB 3.5" HDD using a SATA cable (and keeping the HDD outside). If I want to go for a 2.5" drive, what are my choices in Seagate/WDC.

About backing up existing data, Is it possible to just backup the game saves and restore them on to the new hdd using a USB drive or do I need to backup the entire drive?

What about the PSN account info. Is it also stored on the HDD? i.e will I need to enter everything from scratch?

Any 2.5" 5400RPM SATA drive should work . I remember some site doing a test with a 7200RPM / SSD .. wasn't much difference in loading times etc .

@Lord..I was having the same issue . Coz i also watch movies via my PS3 so upgraded to a 320 Gigs 5400 RPM ans it works fine . Replaced it with the 40 Gigs internal .

1. You're better off buying an internal HDD. The performance difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM drives isnt much when it comes to the PS3. The only difference a few people noted was the faster boot up time. Other than that the speed increase didn't actually result in many games loading faster.

2. You can copy your game saves to a USB drive.

3. PSN account info is stored on Sony's servers. All you have to do is login using ur USN and password.

I'd personally suggest you pick up a 320 GB or 500GB hdd and backup your entire system. Downloading those demos again can be a pain. The entire process of backing up a 40GB hdd doesnt take more than 40 minutes...

P.S I've upgraded my drive to a 250GB hdd around 6 months back and still have around 100GB free space left. You can buy a casing for the 40GB that you remove from the PS3 and use it as a portable drive. Also remember that you will have to put back ur 40GB drive and send it to the service centre in case something goes wrong with your PS3.
