I think I messed up my PS3 HDD (out of warranty so don't ask)... here's the symptoms:

Games load up fine and I can play but anytime it tries to play a cutscene it gets stuck for a while for e.g. when after a fight in UFC it plays the victory cutscene (It continues after a while) or in any cutscene in assassin's creed it loses synch with the audio etc etc.

Tried a lot of the options on the net... resetting... formatting... new firmware etc. and nothing works. Do you think my HDD is broke? or worse something screwy with my Bluray lens?

I can get a new drive and install it but was wondering what you folks think and if there's a way (and any benefit) to attach my drive to the PC and run a chkdsk or something (low level checker maybe on it (yes i know it's not formatted for windows etc).

Gracias!

You could take the hard drive out (doesn't affect the warranty anyway), connect it to PC using the normal power/SATA cable and check for any defects using HD Tune or other utilities.

How old is the console?
